It's hard to get good salmon, and it's getting harder. Plus it's become super expensive. But try to find some good salmon.
I like salmon that tastes mild, and is melt in your mouth tender, but not undercooked. North Atlantic salmon is mild. IDK if your dear old dad would eat it if it tastes like this. Anyway, stay away from salmon with any dark meat. It will taste fishy. Preferable not to have skin on. Dust lightly with a little flour, add a little salt but not too much because salt can be bad for seniors. Quickly saute on one side, flip and saute briefly on the other side. Add a pat of butter to the top, and place in a hot over for about 5mts. Let it bake just until cooked. Pull out of over and serve. Try it and see if you like it that way. Then you might try it on your dad. |
| I say focus on other healthy foods to try if he’s looking to expand his repertoire. My dad is 82 and there is no recipe anywhere that would change his hatred of salmon. I wouldn’t waste the time or money. |
| Walnut crusted salmon is very tasty |
Agree re very fresh salmon. My salmon-adverse DH loves the Jack Daniels-marinated Salmon from the River Falls Market in Potomac cooked at 400 in an air fryer for 8-10 minutes. |
| My father is pretty set in his ways and salmon isn’t in his regular dinner rotation. He will, however, eat salmon cakes (like crabcakes) and salmon salad (like tuna salad). |
We all LOVE salmon, so it's a bit hard to relate, but I'll try .
First, the type of salmon. My favorite is sockeye because it has a strong flavor. Probably not the best for your dad. Look for Atlantic, Coho, or King. Second, the cooking method. I prefer grilled or broiled, because, again, brings out the flavor. I would try poaching or a low/slow roast with a flavorful marinade. Some favorite marinades or toppings among salmon-non-lovers I've met or hosted are: - Soy sauce and brown sugar - Soy sauce, ginger and honey - Whisk a couple tablespoons of mayonnaise together with lemon juice and some herbs (dill, pesto, or Italian blend are all good), press a thin layer on top of the salmon before roasting Salmon chowder - make it like clam chowder, but with salmon instead of clams. Salmon spread - make it like tuna salad, but with canned or 'cooked from fresh' salmon instead of canned tuna. Great as a sandwich, or a topping for crackers. |
I think Somali has been discontinued . |

You remind me of me of my older sister, who would tsk tsk my 94 year old, bed ridden mom because she took a second piece of candy.
I have no doubt that you are coming from a place of love. But no matter what they eat, their remaining time on earth is limited. Let them use it as they will. (Having said that, the first salmon recipe I loved was a slab covered with the following sauce: mayonnaise, dijon mustard, a little melted butter and capers. Spread that over the t top, and broil it for 12 minutes. Yes, I get that you are adding less healthy fat, but with that topping, it was really delicious.) |
| I used to not like salmon but now one of my favorite dishes I usually want weekly involves marinating it soy, miso, ginger, garlic and cooking in oven with a panko bread crumb crust. |
| I love my dad. I spend my time thinking of all his favorite foods to make him to show my love. He loves pea soup and rice pudding. I'm getting good at those. |
| Thanks all. I will try a lot of these. Only on this board can people take offense to me trying help my Dad. He appreciates it btw. 😉 |
+1. Gross. I HATE salmon. The smell. The texture. The taste. No recipe will change that. Talk to his dr. or a dietician if you need to meet some type of dietary needs. |
Good advice here! For all the soy sauce recipe folks, the sodium is not good for anyone, much less older folks. |
