Getting DH tested is not complex and does not require a specialist. Any MD can write a lab order for this. As PP noted, many different labs are able to run the test on DH's sperm. The sample collection might need to be scheduled, as PP noted.

If those test results indicate DH has bad sperm numbers, then DH should go see any urologist (need not be one specializing in reproduction).

This check is easy.

Just wish someone had suggested this to us earlier. It would have saved a lot of time and disappointment.

Definitely worth finding out early.

Yep. My husband asked his PCP to order one after six months trying. She mentioned that it was early but had no problem with it.

We’re there any issues or abnormalities detected in his results?

High white blood cell count but all other parameters good. He was referred to a urologist but we dragged our feet a little bit (since he had no other issues) and eventually went straight to a fertility clinic. Repeat testing was normal.

Not sure what “Male Factor” is, but we had my secret sauce tested. The result was super-sperm. Helped us figure out that DW had something going on we could address.

Simply ask your family doctor to order a “semen analysis” for your husband (explain to your Dr. you are trying / plan to try to conceive soon). Insurance usually covers it.

Then just schedule with the fertility clinic; they will have special / detailed instructions he really needs to follow - in advance (usually 3 to 5 or 6 days in advance).

On testing day, just bring him in; results take about a week or tow to come back.

You can also contact any nearby fertility clinic and ask what insurance they accept or if out of pocket, the cost.

Location matters, so you’ll want to find a place you can conveniently get him to during normal business hours.

PSA pretty much everyone in the RE fields are liars and obfuscate the real success rates. Most likely this won't solve his issue

I’m sorry for your frustration, PP. but this sub forum exists for support, caring, and listening.

This is appropriately because of all the problems, and inevitable heartbreaks when RE is not successful (and you’re right: sometimes it’s just not successful).

Hope you find peace in your life-journey.

Comparing notes w/ other moms, repeat testing was just part of the whole ART journey men need to go through. It’s not a big deal in the grand scheme of things.

It solved ours and we are far from being alone. DH had a varicocele. This was causing his numbers to be very low. He had it fixed - outpatient surgery by a urologist. About 3-4 months later, he retested and his numbers were then normal. That test and fix made all the difference between having children or not having children.

It is totally worth testing DH. And if there is a varicocele, do the surgery fix ASAP.
