If DH has bad numbers, then have a urologist check DH for a varicocele. This has an easy outpatient procedure to fix, and about 6 months later there is a good chance DH will have much better numbers. Many, but not all, TTC challenges have a strong male factor… |
This is such a good PSA!!! IMO, every man should be sent in for testing before seriously TTC. It’s inexpensive (even if insurance won’t cover it) and simple for him. It could have saved so much heartache and wasted time. |
This would be such an unnecessary use of medical resources. It's not like TTC isn't just doing the same thing you should be doing a few times a week, anyway. And it's actually fun! |
“Unnecessary use of medical resource?”
Completely disagree. It’s an inexpensive, common, easy test for him to take. The peace of mind it gives is more than worth it. |
What about when you try for so long that it isn’t fun anymore that it’s just depressing because your husband had something that could have been diagnosed in a few minutes but you waited so many years you couldn’t have kids anymore? Still fun? |
Why would you be waiting years? That’s against medical recommendations. PP just stated that jumping to a medical test before even trying to conceive is unnecessary. Think about how hard it is to get access to good reproductive doctors (or any doctor at this point). You want to advocate clogging the system even more by suggesting ALL men be tested before trying to conceive? |
What evidence do you have that a simple, easy semen analysis some “clogs up the system?” Even Quest diagnostics and LabCorp offer these (but usually only one day a month, because a specialist has to be on site) and you can pay out of pocket. The peace of mind knowing it’s not him is well worth it. |
Don't waste time thinking it's just one thing. It'll take you a full year to get to IVF so get the process started now just in case. |
My parents warned me about that when (inherited risk) but my wife got pregnant the first month we tried. So I stopped believing too much in genetic inheritance 🧬. Especially because I don't even look much like my father or son. |
Doing this in a TTC situation will not clog the medical system.
Getting DH tested is not complex and does not require a specialist. Any MD can write a lab order for this. As PP noted, many different labs are able to run the test on DH's sperm. The sample collection might need to be scheduled, as PP noted. If those test results indicate DH has bad sperm numbers, then DH should go see any urologist (need not be one specializing in reproduction). This check is easy. |
OP, if you offer to go with DH and "help", that might encourage him. |
Just wish someone had suggested this to us earlier. It would have saved a lot of time and disappointment. Definitely worth finding out early. |
Yep. My husband asked his PCP to order one after six months trying. She mentioned that it was early but had no problem with it. |
Bump |
We’re there any issues or abnormalities detected in his results? |
