Some girls like that because it enables them to stand out and show off their dress during the ceremony. It's a personal preference -- a graduation gown is not like a winter coat where there is a "correct" proportion, because it's just a goofy piece of clothing to wear in the first place and it is only worn for a short period of time.


I went to a HS graduation where a good number of young women wore their gowns open the whole ceremony. I couldn't believe it. Why would you want to emphasize a random dress and wear your gown like an open bath robe? Sure, grad gowns can be ugly, but it was surprising.
