This is my approach too—places fill up around here, especially if reasonably priced |
Agree. Planning birthdays 6+ months out with themes, Pinterest boards, etc. for 4 kids does seem way over the top to me (and your DH) |

I have 3 kids so I understand wanting to plan in advance.
I try to give my kids some agency in what they want for the party and I feel they can’t commit too far in advance. Depending on what they’re thinking I try to let them know when I need to book etc. |
| I need 3 months to book venues and ensure no conflicts. But starting to do more home parties with inflation. |
| I don't. Kids are too old for parties now. If they want a party they plan something themselves. No themes involved. |
| Planning wonderful birthdays sounds like a fun hobby. I think your DH is right that it’s not something the kids “need” but wrong to think that’s a reason to stop. If it gives you and the kids pleasure keep doing it! The idea that Mom’s must be martyrs and not do things for pleasure is a terrible one. |
| Oh man: not that far in advance! I just ask my kids what kind of food they want. I don’t have themes and don’t rent out venues - just set up some decorations at home. It takes me a few weeks to plan. |
| 2 months. Mostly to deconflict withbother kids. |
