What popular singer from the 80s or 90s do you think would flop now?

No, with social media, they'd probably be influencers or doing Tiktok videos. Most people lip sync on those.

yeah but the one with prison sentences, drug addiction and ultimately suicide is not going to really stand out on TikTok

Right. We should appreciate the singers from the 70s, 80s and most of the 90s because what we hear on the recording is their real voice. Now everyone uses autotune.

Too ugly.

Same with all of the old ugly dudes who did well then.

I mean, we’ve got Ed Sheeran and Lewis Capaldi making hits so apparently looks aren’t everything.

This. Imagine Kurt Cobain or Billy Corgan being successful now.

I can imagine it actually

What would it look like?

I imagine Cobain as a one hit wonder with Smells Like Teen Spirit. I'm having a harder time imagining Corgan. He was a master at writing albums, and the album is so much less relevant now.

Come on! How you gonna hate on the Pumpkins?

I’m not. I called him a master.

Albums matter less than they did 30 years ago. At least in terms of commercial success.

Lionel Richie.

1. He’s ugly and looked old even when he was young.
2. He would’ve been immediately cancelled for the “Hello” music video, which is so massively stupid and problematic it’s hard to imagine it ever being ok even in 1984.

Ones with distinctive voices then, but if they came out now, would probably not work out:
Morrissey
Bjork

Um no. Morrissey is a musical genius

This. It's more about having the right look and personality to bring in the fans. Auto-tune can make anyone sound pretty good. Plus, it's common practice to have backup singers and a backing vocals track.

Artists from years ago had to rely on their talent to make it. Having good looks was secondary.
