👍+1 DCUM does not represent the rest of the United States of America. |
| I’m kind of surprised it’s ranked #51 overall though. I thought it would be lower. No doubt that its STEM is great. Engineering school #4 overall and engineering undergrad #9. Several majors (AE, EE, ME, and maybe others) ranked within T10. But it’s not known for hum/liberal arts. It doesn’t have a music school. Indiana University is where non-STEM subjects are studied. |
https://www.bestplaces.net/voting/city/indiana/west_lafayette In the last Presidential election, Tippecanoe county flipped narrowly Democratic, 48.8% to 48.1%. Tippecanoe county flipped Democratic in 2020, after voting Republican in four of the last six Presidential elections. Like any good univerity town, west lafayette is becoming more and more blue now. It seems when people get educated, they stop being ignorant. |
Better send your daughter with a car, $1k, condoms & a Mirena IUD. |
Typical DCUM 😁 If your daughter wants to grow up to be a typical DCUM elite, e.g., lawyer, politician, or lobbyist, or to marry one, then Purdue is not the best fit for her. But for serious STEM types, Purdue is a great choice. A degree in engineering, CS, AI, cybersecurity, etc. from Purdue is highly regarded by employers. |

Purdue CS is rapidly rising in the ranks

Last I checked (I think a couple weeks ago?) Purdue was ranked #4 in engineering. |
We toured back in November, and it surprises me you think the dorms are very nice. I thought they seemed depressing. We didn't get to see an actual dorm room, they had a mock one set up off of a common area in one of the dorms. But just walking through the hall in the lower level dorm, I thought seemed pretty bad. I believe (but not 100% positive) it was Owen hall that we walked through. The Ford dining center (right next door) was also pretty bad--there was almost nothing available! I ended up eating a hot dog and fries because there literally wasn't anything else out. You could see they had other "stations" but none of them were open. The hot dog and fries were tasty enough, but it wasn't really what I would have picked if I had other options. Also, you mention the housing situation 2 years ago, but that definitely wasn't the first time. I remember it happening in 2018 as well (my older kid was a college freshman that year. Not at Purdue, but I just remember hearing about it and being glad my kid didn't have a situation like that at his school.) According to this article from 2018, it's an "annual tradition." https://www.jconline.com/story/news/local/purdue/2018/07/13/purdue-dorm-residence-hall-overcrowding/780449002/ |
[/b] +1. Our kid got in for aerospace engineering but chose UVA (cheaper, in the end a smart decision because she changed majors).. Purdue has been brilliantly managed for a decade. You can't say that about most colleges and universities today in america |
Agree. Purdue is about the only college in the country that knows fiscal discipline. |
US News: overall engineering #4, below only MIT, Stanford and UC Berkeley. |
+1. DS got in a couple of years ago, small scholarship, Honors college but did not get the first choice major (CS) and ended going elsewhere. Would have been a great price. We thought the school was really nice as well.. |
what have the done exactly? |

Froze tuition & cut a bunch of programs in the arts. Fired a lot of admins. Cut the student-run radio. Lots of programs & depts are running on skeleton staffing. Off-campus rents are through the roof nowadays due to the increase in wealthy OOS kids. |
