Purdue Tuition Freeze 12 Years in a Row

The rest of the county likes the very affordable OOS tuition, extensive coop opportunities, top ten engineering program, and doesn’t pick a university passed on the politics of the state.

👍+1

DCUM does not represent the rest of the United States of America.

I’m kind of surprised it’s ranked #51 overall though. I thought it would be lower. No doubt that its STEM is great. Engineering school #4 overall and engineering undergrad #9. Several majors (AE, EE, ME, and maybe others) ranked within T10. But it’s not known for hum/liberal arts. It doesn’t have a music school. Indiana University is where non-STEM subjects are studied.

In the last Presidential election, Tippecanoe county flipped narrowly Democratic, 48.8% to 48.1%.
Tippecanoe county flipped Democratic in 2020, after voting Republican in four of the last six Presidential elections.

Like any good univerity town, west lafayette is becoming more and more blue now. It seems when people get educated, they stop being ignorant.

Better send your daughter with a car, $1k, condoms & a Mirena IUD.

Typical DCUM 😁

If your daughter wants to grow up to be a typical DCUM elite, e.g., lawyer, politician, or lobbyist, or to marry one, then Purdue is not the best fit for her. But for serious STEM types, Purdue is a great choice. A degree in engineering, CS, AI, cybersecurity, etc. from Purdue is highly regarded by employers.

Last I checked (I think a couple weeks ago?) Purdue was ranked #4 in engineering.

They had a housing situation 2 years ago when they overenrolled and have since remedied that by guaranteeing Freshman housing and cutting back on enrollment. You can get a quad if you choose one (it is much less expensive) and save more money. You can also get a suite or a single. There are no "forced" quads. It is a stellar education for a reasonable tuition (these days)

We toured back in November, and it surprises me you think the dorms are very nice. I thought they seemed depressing. We didn't get to see an actual dorm room, they had a mock one set up off of a common area in one of the dorms. But just walking through the hall in the lower level dorm, I thought seemed pretty bad. I believe (but not 100% positive) it was Owen hall that we walked through.
The Ford dining center (right next door) was also pretty bad--there was almost nothing available! I ended up eating a hot dog and fries because there literally wasn't anything else out. You could see they had other "stations" but none of them were open. The hot dog and fries were tasty enough, but it wasn't really what I would have picked if I had other options.

Also, you mention the housing situation 2 years ago, but that definitely wasn't the first time. I remember it happening in 2018 as well (my older kid was a college freshman that year. Not at Purdue, but I just remember hearing about it and being glad my kid didn't have a situation like that at his school.) According to this article from 2018, it's an "annual tradition." https://www.jconline.com/story/news/local/purdue/2018/07/13/purdue-dorm-residence-hall-overcrowding/780449002/

+1. Our kid got in for aerospace engineering but chose UVA (cheaper, in the end a smart decision because she changed majors).. Purdue has been brilliantly managed for a decade. You can't say that about most colleges and universities today in america

Agree. Purdue is about the only college in the country that knows fiscal discipline.

US News: overall engineering #4, below only MIT, Stanford and UC Berkeley.

+1. DS got in a couple of years ago, small scholarship, Honors college but did not get the first choice major (CS) and ended going elsewhere. Would have been a great price. We thought the school was really nice as well..

I don’t know. You have to ask Mitch Daniels, former president of Purdue for 10 years, for magic formula. Being a STEM heavy school, especially in engineering and CS, they do get a lot of corporate donations and sponsorships. But other colleges do too. Probably they don’t spend on extravagant stuff. The new president, Mung Chiang, who took over in January of this year, said in an interview that the president’s salary is the same as a fully tenured professor. Many university presidents (including public ones) are paid 7 digits now. (Back in the late 80’s UCLA Chancellor Young was paid $150k per year and some thought it was too high then. Even with inflation, it’s minuscule compared to how much college chiefs are paid today. Sorry for digressing.) Anyway, this new President Chiang was the dean of engineering school and ECE professor. He had been a tenured professor at Princeton before he went to Purdue a few years ago. There are interviews of him on YT. (Ph.D from Stanford.) Seems like a no-nonsense guy.

Froze tuition & cut a bunch of programs in the arts. Fired a lot of admins. Cut the student-run radio. Lots of programs & depts are running on skeleton staffing. Off-campus rents are through the roof nowadays due to the increase in wealthy OOS kids.
