We toured and have a family member at Purdue. The facilities are beautiful and the dorms are very nice. They had a housing situation 2 years ago when they overenrolled and have since remedied that by guaranteeing Freshman housing and cutting back on enrollment. You can get a quad if you choose one (it is much less expensive) and save more money. You can also get a suite or a single. There are no "forced" quads. It is a stellar education for a reasonable tuition (these days)
We toured back in November, and it surprises me you think the dorms are very nice. I thought they seemed depressing. We didn't get to see an actual dorm room, they had a mock one set up off of a common area in one of the dorms. But just walking through the hall in the lower level dorm, I thought seemed pretty bad. I believe (but not 100% positive) it was Owen hall that we walked through. The Ford dining center (right next door) was also pretty bad--there was almost nothing available! I ended up eating a hot dog and fries because there literally wasn't anything else out. You could see they had other "stations" but none of them were open. The hot dog and fries were tasty enough, but it wasn't really what I would have picked if I had other options. Also, you mention the housing situation 2 years ago, but that definitely wasn't the first time. I remember it happening in 2018 as well (my older kid was a college freshman that year. Not at Purdue, but I just remember hearing about it and being glad my kid didn't have a situation like that at his school.) According to this article from 2018, it's an "annual tradition." https://www.jconline.com/story/news/local/purdue/2018/07/13/purdue-dorm-residence-hall-overcrowding/780449002/
