Are there other benefits to living in McLean besides the excellent schools?

Commutable to many DMV jobs. We have worked in L’Enfant, Near DuPont Circle, Chantilly, Tysons, Bethesda, and Reston. We have been able to have a decent commute to all of them.

I work in the fed gov - lots of lazy bums that know they can’t get fired. The occasional hard worker ends up leaving for private sector.

I commute to dc once a week and live in central mclean. It’s still 50 minutes each way leaving at 8am taking GW parkway. 35 with no traffic.

I guess that’s better than what it would be from outside the beltway.

Relatively easy commuting to D.C., Tyson's, Reston, and the Toll Road corridor. There are more homes which are newer, on larger lots, than is typical in Arlington/Alexandria, although a significant amount of smaller, older housing stock remains. Proximity to Tyson's and Vienna for dining/shopping is a plus for many, and several large parks are in the area for recreation.

The value of the schools is not to be underestimated, either. The quality of the schools supports sustained high real estate values, and attracts residents who value better schools, a demographic not always predominant in other areas.

We are high income Asian immigrants. McLean schools are about 30-50% Asian kids of similar backgrounds. My kids thrive here without feeling like a minority. This is not the case for DC/Arlington/Bethesda.

The public schools are 30-35% Asian and only then if they are AAP centers. But cross into North Arlington and it’s more like 5%.

This. McLean provides this similar demographic as California without the prohibitively high property price. Those high income Asians plus high income white population are sustaining the demand.

Except you, of course.

most people in the wealthy parts of mclean go to privates anyway. no one is looking at the schools when they’re choosing to buy a 2.5 million+ home, especially in a place like mclean

we never once considered sending our kids to cooper or langley. quite frankly, we live in great falls for the open greenery, large lots, and equestrian activities. i understand that there are lower income, cookie cutter families who do choose to live in mclean for the good schools, but that’s far from the reality for people like us.

Yes, I totally agree. In fact, just for fun, I stop by the public schools around dismissal time and ask the young lads if they know how deprived they are by having to go to public schools and not being able to participate in equestrian activities. I also make it a point to tell random grocery store clerks about my latest travels and explain to them how unfortunate it is that they can't have the same wonderful life that I do.
