This attitude is why I'm so upset about marijuana being legalized in MD. Marijuana proponents will insist, "It's still illegal for minors!" but because it's legalized, law enforcement no longer think it's worth the trouble to go after kids for something that's legal for adults to do. Nevermind all of the research that shows how harmful marijuana use is to adolescents. No one in state and local government cares anymore. Everyone just turns a blind eye to weed. It's depressing. |

But robbery, drug distribution, possession of firearms by juveniles, possession of firearms during the commission of a felony, possession of firearms during a drug crime — all those things are against the law, aren’t they?

Same at our middle school! The kids are dealing drugs at school and outside of school. My kid has witnessed it in the bathroom. It’s crazy that our schools have become a ‘safe’ place for the kids to distribute drugs to other students. Don’t blame the principal. He’s right. There really is nothing he can do! It’s a complicated and dysfunctional system all around. |
I also find this terrifying. I have one kid in high schools and one in middle school. Drugs abound at both schools. I’m not happy that weed was legalized. But the weed doesn’t scare me as much as the fentanyl and the other drugs floating around. We try to talk about it, but the drugs are just SO ubiquitous IN schools. It’s terrifying and so disheartening that our political leaders and MCPS leadership really isn’t doing anything about the problem. Instead our high school is hosting a seminar about Restorative Justice. Which clearly hasn’t been effective in getting drugs out of schools. |
Did you vote NO on Question 4 last year when you casted your vote for Moore? It was passed in Maryland with ~67% vs ~33% |
RJ is actually telling kids that there are no real consequences for distributing drugs, or beating up another kid or a teacher, being disruptive such that no one in the class can really learn, .. Basically the kids know that they can get away with a lot because of RJ. |
| Why was the girl released to her mom but the boy charged as an adult? I think both should be charged. |
I think the principal should show leadership instead of waiting for someone to OD. I don't know why everyone is throwing their hands up to this. Maybe the parents should start being charged if their kid is found dealing drugs on or near school property. What happened to the 'drug free' zones? I'm not an alarmist but this is harmful to turn a blind eye to. If they get away with selling weed, they can get away with other things. It's a slippery slope that we won't be able to come back from without consequence if this is allowed to continue. |
Yes, I did. Hence why I said I was upset it was legalized.... |
Kids openly mock the "drug-free zone" signs on MCPS properties because of how much drug distribution and use happens on school grounds. It's sad. And it's a joke. Dr. McKnight and Ed Clarke, MCPS's so-called Chief Safety Officer, have utterly failed in this regard. And they seem to be more worried about the optics than aggressively tackling the problem with inventive and effective solutions. |
Well, what have they been doing when they find a kid using or distributing or with substances at school? |
This is sickening. I’d be nervous too, How can school leaders abdicate all responsibility? Can you send him to a Catholic or other private HS? |
I agree that they should both be charged. |
| Thank you for sharing this. I had no idea about this incident |
You know the details well enough to judge? |
