UMCP CS or UVA CS

Be a winner and choose UVA.

Save your money and get a much stronger academic program. Seems like a no brainer to me. The only reason i would consider uva over umd for computer science would be if you believe your kid might fit in better culturally. Even then, i would still pick umd. I majored in CS back in the day and historically, umd is the strongest cs program in this area. Another consideration would be if your kid is not a strong enough student.

Both are state flagships
Overall ranking UVA 25 and UMD 55, the difference doesn't mean much at all especially when UMD CS is better regarded.

UVA was in the top 20 of the just published WSJ list of public schools with graduates getting the hishest salaries in Tech. UMD was not.

Can we stop talking about college CS ranking? It is getting tiresome and nobody cares about it. The pay salary at AWS and Apple is almost the same for grads from UVA and UMD., and even for GMU.

Also, the WSJ ranking does not show the full picture. Please re-read the article about what type of data was gathered, then think really hard about why the rankings show what they do. Don't hurt yourself, though.

You tried to do a rebuttal without making any points.

the point was pretty clear.

I can understand why a Maryland resident would consider an OOS public flagship for their kid. However, I don’t understand the appeal of a school that’s not known to be very strong in STEM? Why pay top dollar for a better education in CS at a much lower price from your instate choice?

Great summary. Very efficient. Truth.

OOS total COA for UVA engineering was like $89k...kind of crazy if you ask me. That has to be the highest or one of the highest OOS total COA of any state university in the country.

I don't understand why you would pick UVA OOS CS instead of in-state UMD CS. UMD definitely ranked higher.

Maybe it's a decision if you were in-state VA since it is still nearly $50k total COA for UVA vs. $57k total OOS COA for UMD.

Your argument was non-existent.

LOL.. Please... if UVA is rated higher, you'd be all over rankings.

As a matter of fact, when speaking of general rankings, UVA boosters mention the rankings all the time. There's even the timeless UVA booster who mentions the Rhodes Scholars every chance they get.

And VT for CS is better than UVA.

Honestly employers don’t care which one you go to! Stop with this nonsense. CS employers will take people with no degrees.

We just had this exact thread in this forum, within the past month or so. Silly to repeat the bickering.

Please tell that to the UVA "Rhodes scholar" booster. Thanks.
