UMCP CS or UVA CS

Anonymous
DC is trying to decide between UMCP CS or UVA CS. DC is definitely set on studying CS and he finds in interesting. We live in MD. Would UMCP CS make more sense than UVA CS given that UMCP CS program has better reputation although UVA is ranked higher overall?

More important than rankings, where does he want to do and what can you afford? huge cost difference, but if you can afford it and he's interested in getting out of MD, then do that. Really no wrong answer.

UMD CP CS is an amazing value for state residents. Good for your child for being able to take advantage of that selective program with an unreal price tag.

Unless the kid applied for CA, but really in their heart dreams of the world of finance and law, UMD-CP CS is the clear choice.

If you are MD instate, ZERO reason to consider UVA.

Virginia oos tuition of 57k is a ripoff and UMCP is a better program even if the costs were similar.

+1 unless money isn't an issue, and your kid dislikes the urban environment of CP, UMDCP.

Even so, UMDCP CS is T20. UVA is not.

The cost difference is not that much between UMD OOS CS and UVA in-state for CS from the College of Engineering and Sciences. Tuition/Room/Board/fee @UMD will cost around 52K/yr OOS and around 45K/yr for UVA in-state.

UMD is for the rigorous majors. UVa is better at the easier majors.

I posted exact same Q a couple of months back and received tons of responses.
And I am 100%+ sure for CS program, UMD better than UVA (cost is even between the Two for us)
But at the end of day, my kid chose UVA, well, well

Can we stop talking about college CS ranking? It is getting tiresome and nobody cares about it. The pay salary at AWS and Apple is almost the same for grads from UVA and UMD., and even for GMU.

No, no, no. Pick UVA for two most important reasons - Ranking, OOS Tuition.

LOL.. Please... if UVA is rated higher, you'd be all over rankings.

As a matter of fact, when speaking of general rankings, UVA boosters mention the rankings all the time. There's even the timeless UVA booster who mentions the Rhodes Scholars every chance they get.

And VT for CS is better than UVA.

Yes, they have reading comprehension issues.

+1 Apparently, they produce more "polished" graduates where Biff marries Buffy, and leave the serious STEM majors to UMDCP.
