I find downtown Ellicott City depressing. I don't understand why people like it. Frederick is much better.

EC is depressing partially because it’s prone to devastating floods

Ashburn/Leesburg has to be the worst. Soulless, lacks charm, flat, spread out, cookie-cutter manufactured suburbia. The wine country to the west is nice but I'm fine making the longer drive further out there when I need to.

I like “downtown” Middleburg

Ashburn and Leesburg aren’t exurbs.

exurb
ĕk′sûrb″
noun
A semirural region lying just beyond the suburbs of a city.

Places like Fairfax, Leesburg, Ashburn, Frederick exurbs is just ridiculous. There’s hardly any rural land in any of these places. Those are the definition of suburb. Even Woodbridge is a suburb not exurb.

+1

None of the places listed are semi-rural. They’re all strip malls and cookie cutter houses.

People need to educate themselves on what an exurb is. This thread is embarrassing.

Kent Island/ Queen Annes County or Southern Anne Arundel are probably pretty good options depending on the lifestype you want.

I was going to say Annapolis initially, but the "not exurb" scolds convinced me that's not the case.

A basic 5 minute google of DC exurbs found references to Loudoun County, Fauquier County, and Frederick as exurbs of DC.

Leesburg is very nice. And there are several nice towns nearby.

I like the old town area of Fredericksburg and it has easy train access to DC.

Frederick isn’t really an exurb. It’s more if it’s own city that has been sucked into the commuting area.

But Vienna and Reston are the epitome of charm.
