It depends on the school. Ours offered it on the registration form. We just checked yes for it. I talked to the counselor and they said it went by MAP, PARCC scores and grades. |

Correct! TPMS, like most MCPS MS does not accelerate kids into Algebra because of MAP scores. However, this does happen at a handful of wealthy MS like Frost. The only students eligible for Algebra 1 in 6th at TPMS come from a wealthy Potomac ES that offers AIM in 5th grade. |

Talking Alg I in 6th isn’t encouraged for a few reasons:
Math teachers want to ensure time to develop excellent foundational skills so math is not a problem in the upper levels. Most MS don’t offer AlgII which means the student has to be bused to the HS for math in 8th. Maryland requires 4 yrs of Math in HS. And that requires student take very rigorous and high level math courses that they might not need or want if they take Alg in 6th. |
