NP here - can you tell me what you like about Capstone? I've seen this place and wondered what it is like.

The trainers really get to know your kid and their goals. Both of mine have loved it and they’re at that grouchy teen age. It’s hard work but they make it fun. They track your kids progress individually so even through its a group class, they show your kid their individual progress. The trainers also teach the kids then”why”- we’re doing this drill or exercise because… xyz.

DD did Capstone this summer (her regular sport doesn't play in the summer). She really liked it. It's kind of cross-fity, but the instructors are nice.

I know from past experience with my oldest, who had motor challenges, that they are very accepting and foster a positive atmosphere. They're part of Dynamite Gym, which also has Tumbling and Trampoline classes your son might enjoy.

NP here. Thanks for this suggestion. I'm also looking for some active/fitness class for my 15 yo DS who is not a natural athlete.

Bump. Any other suggestions for a 15 year old DS in the Chevy Chase/Bethesda area. Has anyone checked out the new St James gym?

My kid could use exercise classes and is in no way overweight. Not sure why some of the PPs immediately assumed every kid who needs exercise has to loose weight. Thanks for the good suggestions on this thread.

Fencing is great exercise and lots of kid start at his age.

Highly highly recommend Neural Movement in Rockville. My DS is a super nerdy, Dungeon and dragon, non competitive individual. Only thing he enjoys doing when it comes to fitness is the classes the past 3 years. To us it’s a bit on the expensive side but totally worth it.

We want him to get fit, perhaps lose some weight since it’s starting to bother him. Any great classes you can recommend. We live in DC but can drive out as far as Rockville or Alexandria. Thank you so much!

What about tennis lessons?

Great exercise, builds confidence. He doesn’t need to go to tournaments if he doesn’t want to compete. The belt promotion exams aren’t so much about competition with others as they are self-improvement.

was coming to say same. it is individual, non-competitive (unless one enters tournaments), and there is a lot of welcomeness and comraderie in the studio.

my kids did tae kwon do when younger. my husband recently started muy thai. I have seen men and women ranging from age 5 through 75 there. plenty of teens.

No one is assuming anything. They are responding to OP who said her kid is overweight.

But most have good coaches that will scale the WOD to his abilities and make sure he masters form.

Plus, there will be a bunch of dudes in their 20s who will welcome him with open arms and make him feel comfortable and safe in the gym.

We always love it when we have a teenager in the class

This is because a lot of crossfitters are former "fat kids" - growing up we weren't into sports and there weren't as many non-sport/individual/coordination-not-required exercise options.

Yup, and its the perfect atmosphere for a teen boy struggling with his body image or with his changing body.

There will be guys there that look like Thor. And they'll be SUPER nice to him, and take him under their wing. And he'll feel good about being "friends" with these guys that can do superhero things like deadlift 500lbs and then go string together muscle-ups.

It's the perfect environment for a kid like that. Super welcoming and safe

I’d be concerned about steroid use.
