Where is the Oakland school?

Oakland Elementary is in Arlington.

No, that is OakRIDGE.

Lol, I need sleep. Of course, you are right!

So, the incident happened with Oakridge in APS?

It was a sexual incident between students. I don't have more info (and while I understand that there was a lot of curiosity I do feel like even knowing that much is a violation of those kids' privacy, so that's all I want to know).

Its disturbing and the folks on AEM wondering why kids misbehaving would cause overnights to be paused look like idiots. Use your brains people.

Anonymous wrote:We received word about the cancellation this morning too. I had seen the other thread. I'm disappointed that with over 6 weeks until my kid was to go, that APS couldn't try to figure out an approach with greater supervision in that timeframe before just throwing their hands up and cancelling. It's not like my child was supposed to go next week.

A child was abused by another student and you're upset about a field trip? Have some perspective and empathy. APS parents at it again

I just hope they can continue to program. Seems like it has been going for years with amazing results, and my kid has loved it (and planned to go to summer camp there for a week). It has been amazing for my kid and I hope it's not in trouble because of one incident. While I wouldn't want another incident like that to happen, I hope they can put some safeguards in place without too much trouble and go forward.

Makes me glad for Scouts. They do camping and outdoors all the time. Yes I know there's a history of abuse, but now they are on hypersensitive to it - and they are still getting it done. Overreactive public school culture will shut down yet another great thing for students and leave it to a private org to provide it. BTW, week at Goshen scout reserve is significantly cheaper than Lab, and kiss do more.

Agree. We should not let a handful of sexual abuse claims get in the way of a good time.

Not sure why the prior posters don't mention that Scouts initial was to ignore decades worth of abuse and wait until lawsuits forced their hand. Now they have very restricted camping rules..is this the path you want APS to follow?

Yes, it only took 50 or so years and what, hundreds of thousands of survivors coming forward?

Yeah my husband is a reporter who covered the Scouts abuse stories. He will not let our kids participate.

It’s been a really rough few years for this school system.

You do you. My kids and are I are camping now with Scouts. When Lab closes we'll still be enjoying the great outdoors and learning leadership and citizenship. And for lower cost.

BTw, if your husband was a good reporter he would know all the changes the Scouts have implemented in last 10-20 years too. There's going to be a whole generation of stressed out, myopic kids from hunkering at home with their iPads because their parents suffered an outdated bias. There's another thread here of parents of adult kids and things they wished they'd done - you'll notice that Scouts was cited several times.
- signed, another reporter

NP. I get your point, but of course you know that there are options other than "hunkering at home with their iPads" and participating in scouts.

Current six graders missed both the 5th grade overnight at outdoor lab and the fourth grade field trip. Yes it sucked but you move on. Current fifth grade parents need to get a grip.

My DC will not overnight anyplace unless *I* am there to keep them safe. For that matter, I always volunteer to chaperone on any day trips…
