Op - we are in nyc so col insane.
Wife makes about $650 - 750 (depending on bonus). But again in nyc that is prob equivalent of $250 in dc.
I would like to make it more even so she can step back

If you can’t live on 800-900 k combined you have a spending problem.

You also are never going to make enough to alllw her to step back if you’re used to spending that much.

OP pivoting to a career making $300k in your 40s is not happening unless you have a buddy at a hedge fund willing to throw you a line for a mid level position.

Same pp here. Not sure you’d want that though. I only saw how much you earn after I posted.

If you live in New York there are tons of marketing jobs that should pay WAY more than what you’re making.

Give me a break, OP. $650k in NYC is more like $400-450k in DC. Your family is wealthy. If your wife can't throttle back a little without any change in your salary, then, indeed, you have a spending problem.

There is No Way you can make enough for her to step back. Whatever job she has, it is high powered enough so that it is unlikely she can drop down to PT or even 75%. Do more of the housework and child duties OP. Like do 99% of it. That is your real opportunity to contribute and relieve her stress.

That's a lot of money! I do nonprofit editing/writing and am just starting a new job that pays $85k - and I thought that was decent. I guess next time I am ready to try for something new, I should look at associations!

PP here: It is not common to make this much but there are exceptions.

Op - if I could double my salary then she could get a less demanding job and we’d make about the same.
For those saying we have a spending problem - understand that you cannot buy a 3 br apt in Manhattan or any good part of bk for less than about $3m. That does not include aprox $7k tax and maintenance on said apt). Private school is $110k for 2 kids (so $200k pre tax income). Even groceries are insane - ny is insane. Mid level hedge funders here are not making $300k they are making $1m+. So I feel like there has to be a way. Marketing is not a bad plan..

Honey, can you hear yourself? You don't HAVE to live in Manhattan. Your kids don't HAVE to go to an expensive private school. Your kids don't HAVE to go to private school at all. Buy groceries at cheaper stores. There's so much wiggle room here.

Move to NJ or Westchester and commute. Your kids can commute to their private just like half their classmates do.

This sounds like the best advice, unless the wife is miserable and wants to cut back. If so, then maybe a total change is in order (move from the HCOL area).
