Anyone know when fall try-outs start for high schools in MCPS?

If that's the case, I guess my DD won't be playing volleyball. That is ridiculously too early and she is in camp then. I wish MCPS never started before Labor Day. There is basically one month of summer now.

This post doesn’t make sense. MCPS school start has nothing to do with the start of fall sports. Plus, the sport is what you are choosing for a summer activity instead of vacation. Welcome to high school, where you have to make choices between kids’ activities and other family activities.

I think there's a winter volleyball season - maybe co-ed?

I think it’s spring. I know some kids who did fall and winter sports and are now in volleyball.

And to the original PP or the volleyball shoot off, after this year your kid will likely be expected to do summer workouts starting in mid July. Plan your vacations for the end of June if you want them in fall sports.

I am sorry but that is ridiculous. Does winter sports force them to work over Thanksgiving and Winter Break? Does Spring sports say no Spring Break

I agree it is a ridiculous expectation to have kids cut their vacations so short, but it probably helps the mega-schools in that it weeds out a certain percentage of kids who are not willing to do it. We are weeded out! There are plenty of private sports options out there that are better than the high school experience in terms of sports training. You miss all the school spirit, though!

How do they weed out winter and spring sports? Why does Fall start a month before the season starts.

Winter and spring sport tryouts start about 3 weeks before the season starts. Then there are practices. Also, kids can do off-season conditioning.

Actually yes. There is practice between Christmas and New Years. They get Christmas and New Years days off.

And if a couple of families are unhappy, great, just means a few less kids to weed through at try outs. The large mcps high schools make it hard for anyone to get on the team (although easier to get on soccer upcountry, and you can walk on to football downcounty)

For the most part, yes.

Reach out to the xc coach and ask. They might have flexibility.

My kids went to different HSs. One was flexible and one was not. Even for a no cut sport you have to show up

Yes, some spring sports play into Tuesday or Wednesday of Spring Break. But that’s made clear early in the season.

This was true for our DD too. She played a Spring sport and the expectations and calendar were presented at try outs so there were no surprises. They always played in a tournament over Spring Break.

NP here. DC1 in wrestling and DC2 in swimming absolutely had practices and meets during winter break. Don't know what imaginary land PP is in, but winter sports doesn't take 10 days off.

Teams are enormous; there are many talented bench warmers on MCPS teams

Poms also practices. The schools are crowded with kids during winter break.
