Sorry I got my studies mixed up, this isn't the one about obstetrics specially, that's this one (https://www.healthaffairs.org/doi/abs/10.1377/hlthaff.2021.01478), but the overall effect was observed in both studies.

Because the hospitals mostly failed in areas that refused to expand Medicaid.

It works pretty well, until it doesn’t. FDR had the benefit of seeing with his own eyes what happened in China and Russia when the masses became so poor and fed up they couldn’t take it anymore. We could have very easily gone that direction if we didn’t respond the way we did during the Depression.

Today’s Republicans think they can simultaneously dabble in populism and actively repress the masses. It’s a dangerous game and just as likely to blow up their faces as pay off with a modern American fascist state. Right now they are attacking the “evil East Coast libs,” but it’s only so long before people realize the East Coast bourgeoisie aren’t the ones actively smacking food out of their kids hands in Alabama.
