Envy? They'd just buy a house over there if that was the case. |
No clue but a week doesn't go by where they don't post here to complain about how unfair it is that their child was rejected. |
I think you might be surprised how many magnet students choose UMD over acceptances to Ivy leagues. I did that, years ago, and a large number of my friends did too. Magnet students, by and large, aren't uber wealthy. Their parents tend to be upper middle class, but often first generation immigrant. Few have generational wealth. In retrospect, I kind of wish I hadn't even bothered applying to those Ivys. It's pretty depressing to get *in* and then see how much aid they (don't) give you, and how many loans you have to take to get there....that just didn't go over well in my uber practical family. And for the most part, I agree (now). An engineer from Yale isn't necessarily going to make much more than an engineer from UMD. |
These schools are only going to take so many kids from each high school. So, out of the 100 or so students, is it better to be too at another school or lower in the magnet pack is the real question. It is funny how rich families from the w schools push to get their kids in but world never live down county. It’s absurd the county only has 100 slots per grade. Lots of deserving kids got waitlisted. |
Many of us could lottery into Blair and choose other dcc schools instead. I did not want my kid there for a variety of reasons but was curious if mine could get in. We are on the waitlist but we’d turn it down. |
Dcc has a consortium so you can lottery in. |
There's a huge difference in cost >$250k so just not worth it for a lot of people. |
Especially since UMD is T15 in Engr/CS but Yale is not in the T30. |

I remember at the RMIB open house the director showed a slide of all the places the last year’s seniors went to college.
Then I went to the Blair magnet open house and the director pointed out that he WOULDNT be showing such a slide, bc he said their focus is on high school, and they’re not obsessed with where kids end up- or something like that. That really made an impression on me, and I like that Blair doesn’t make a big deal about where their kids go. Agree that many head to UMD for their CS, engineering, sciences. |
They mean the magnet obviously, and tons of people have Blair envy. I haven't heard the same about RM. The program's great but I don't think people are dying to get in there like Blair. |
magnet envy? yes, i can understand that. Blair envy, no way in hell. you couldn't pay us to attend blair non magnet. |
+1 I wouldn't say "majority" but UMDCP does get the largest RMIB cohort compared to any other college. https://www2.montgomeryschoolsmd.org/siteassets/schools/high-schools/r-w/rmhs/ib/ib-colleges-20-22.pdf |
That list is fascinating. |
I would be interested to see 2023 numbers. I'm hearing this year is particularly brutal. |
