Bamboo: is running bamboo on or near a property a dealbreaker?

*it wouldn’t be a dealbreaker

Was it this one? Yowzers. https://redf.in/cmNadT

We looked at that one and ran away (went under contract that weekend anyway lol).

We had a backyard fence made of bamboo when we moved in 25 years ago. 2 years and over $15,000 later, it was gone. We first chopped down what we could, then hired a landscaping company to come out with a Bobcat and dig up and remive all the root balls. For 2 years we chased the rhizomes, digging them all the way out whenever they popped up. Then we had the original company come back and install 3' corrugated steel between us and the neighbors.

I promise you, it's gone

+1

Some people hate bamboo, but bamboo is never (never) as bad as those people claim it to be in the DMV area (queue the rare exceptions and overblown posts in 3,2,1.....)

I would budget $10k just in case.

A lot of people don't like bamboo, but I happen to like it for several reasons.

It provides a privacy screen when you need one. You don't need a lot of land for the privacy screen. It provides shelter for birds. I love how birds will roost in it at night and will herald evening with all their tweeting. Other wildlife also seek shelter in the bamboo.

You can keep it from spreading by placing a barrier in the ground, or you can cut down the new growth.

There's clumping bamboo and running bamboo. The running bamboo is the one that spreads much faster. Clumping bamboo spreads slowly.

It’s lovely and amazing but it’s a nightmare. Get it removed by the seller.

Seller won't do a good job removing. Budget it into your offer.

Based on what friends of ours were quoted to remove a lot of bamboo on their property in MD, I would guesstimate that it would cost around $25K to remove all of this.
