Bamboo: is running bamboo on or near a property a dealbreaker?

I’ve read to avoid.

the DC area is full of bamboo, if you avoided it you would never buy a home here.

If you can avoid it but it depends on where you are looking. Because some neighborhoods it’s not really avoidable. You can clear it but it will be an ongoing thing.

I wouldn't rule it out, but I'd budget in several thousand dollars for eradicating it and installing a proper barrier.

Yes, avoid at all cost. We have it and it is terrible.
You will either need to pay thousands to dig it all up. Or you will spend so much time just trying to maintain it.

It is so invasive and keeps coming back. We spent so many hours cutting it down and digging out so many of the rhizomes, but it is still a constant battle and grows back so fast. Even if you can completely get rid of it or continuously cut it down, if your neighbors have it, you are screwed unless you put a barrier under the ground on your property line.

I would never buy another house with bamboo on the property or surrounding properties. It is a nightmare.

It is definitely not people's favorite. If you're considering putting it in and thinking of reselling your home one day, don't.

Agree with pp. Avoid at all costs.

My neighbor has this between our yards. It was there when I moved in. Every weekend for about 6 weeks in late Spring I get to cut down new growth to prevent it from spreading into my yard. The rest of the year I can ignore it.

+1. Just factor it into your offer price. We paid about $3k for our barrier.

We just looked at a house that bordered to basically a bamboo forest. There was no bamboo on their lot (we walked the fence line), but it either hasn't popped up yet or they cut it all down.

It depends if the bamboo is clumping or if it’s running. We had running bamboo in our yard planted by the previous owners and it took me 2 years to get rid of it. Even if you had it professionally removed, it would take a year or more of monitoring and treating with chemicals to make sure it doesn’t return. I would have to really love a house to buy one with bamboo again.

Just FYI - Fairfax County has a new ordinance requiring property owners to contain running bamboo to their own property.

Was this ordinance passed via Zoom?

My neighbor has some. I cut a couple sprouts every year. I also pull hundreds of weeds every year. So no, it is not a big deal.

No, if I loved the house, it’s it a dealbreaker. I would make plans to remediate.
