We are not sure how bad it would look to apply, be accepted, turn down, then reapply the following year?

Depends on the school. Do NOT turn Sidwell down. It's the Harvard of the USA's private schools so they never need to chase you. But at other schools maybe.

Agree don't turn Sidwell down. But Harvard of the USA private schools? You seriously need to get out more.

I know, right? The poster should look at some of the private schools in NYC and the Northeast, she’d be in awe.

Well it could be looked at as an Ivy equivalent of the DMV private scene, along next to Basis in McLean.

What would be some good reasons to decline so the school won’t hold it against you?

There really isn't one.

1. Unexpected foreign service assignment
2. Sudden and catastrophic medical situation

I could see trying to make an argument that you made the wrong choice and kid is unhappy, but that won’t work at places like NCS/STA, Sidwell, or Potomac. Schools like Flint Hill might be willing to give you another shot.

OP, kinda bingo there.

What is it about Flint Hill that makes you say that?

It's far less competitive

I find statements like this so strange. Are they from families not in the private school world? I grew up here and have kids in a competing school. Sidwell is no more or less wonderful than other top privates, yet lately on this board people as if it’s the end all be all.

Anonymous wrote:Don't do it OP. You have no way of knowing the admissions people's attitudes towards this and it could change between now and when you reapply based on whoever is working there. Take the spot now if you think you'll want it. Assume your child won't be accepted again.

+1. Totally agree with this.

No, turn down Sidwell. It's a pressure cooker and a woke cesspool.

I know student who did this with Potomac and attempted to apply the following year. Not a good outcome.

You are lucky to get into Potomac anyway.

If you don’t want a woke school, what’s a good school that openly supports white supremacy we can send our kids to?
