My kid started Kilmer this year and I was dreading it based on reviews and comments on this website. And I have been pleasantly surprised. Maybe bc my kid is in AAP. But even the electives have been good so far. |
I agree that PTA is great and does a lot of fundraisers, but not every grade went on a field trip last year or has gone on one this year. That's my experience with the school so far, we haven't been in this area very long. It appears to me that the focus for the PTA this year, based on the email communications they send out, is clearly on improving the facilities and keeping teachers happy. I haven't really seen anything about clubs, field trips, etc. |
Who’s responsibility is it to plan field trips? |
| My child will have gone on a total of 5 field trips this year alone. |
| So OP< did you go for the house? |
|
Field trip are planned by the teacher. Neighboring schools go to Jamestown or Williamsburg in fourth grade— maybe that is what PP referring to?
Positives: The PTA at Shrevewood is excellent. The communication from admin and via social media is much improved. (Compared to the previous principal.) There are some great teachers. |
What grade? |
4th grade parent here - I haven't heard anything about a Jamestown trip and I'll be very disappointed if they don't go. Lemon Road just went this week. I always thought Jamestown was an FCPS-sponsored trip like the Kennedy Center because so many people here have posted about it. |
Me again - 4th grade did go to the Kennedy Center this year. 3rd grade just went to the Natural History Museum. I don't know what other grades have and have not been on field trips, though. |
My fourth grader at another FCPS school went to Jamestown in December. It was a long day, but a great experience for the kids. You should ask the school about going. |
| OP- Did you buy the house?! |
The Catholic school is St. James, and I would argue it's not walkable as it's located on Rt 7/Broad Street. It's true that some families moved their kids there for the in-person experience and then just decided to wait it out until Marshall. |
DC is a Shrevewood 6th grader. Field trips were suspended during the height of COVID, but he went to the Portrait Gallery this week and is going to Philadelphia this year. Typically in 4th grade they go to Jamestown, but due to COVID t hat didn't happen. I would imagine that happened at most, if not all ES's. |
My kids school did not go last year even though other schools did. I think it is a common field trip but it is not a guaranteed thing. |
Enough families transferred from Shrevewood that capacity is no longer an issue. I realize other factors played into this. This was a win for Shrevewood, in terms of class size, anyway. |
