The school could make it clear to students that theft is unacceptable and comes with consequences if they are caught. It is not doing that.

Do you think if we tell all people that theft is unacceptable, then it’ll stop all over the world? Grow up. It’s in the SR&R, they have parents, and live in the US - they know it’s unacceptable and comes with consequences “if caught.”

They did not take the school laptop because they know that comes with consequences. They did take everything else (including the money) because they know there won't be any. Certainly not from the school based on their response.

Why does your kid store money in his laptop case? What reason is there to bring ant cash to school? That is risky to begin with.

Weird that he got his binder stolen. Seems much more plausible that he misplaced it.

Someone took the time to rifle through his laptop bag and steal his money from it. At the same time, his binder disappeared. He only left them unattended for a short time. I'm not sure how much more obvious it could be.

Sorry this happened. It's a bummer but a life lesson. You don't leave money unattended, especially after the attempted theft. You just don't. A middle schooler should be carrying a wallet or crossbody purse anyway.

As for the binder...the only thing I can think of is to alert his teachers so they can be on the lookout for any work that seems similar to your child's. The binder could have been taken for cheating purposes.

That's a shame, but there is really not much the school can do if someone did not see it. Life's lesson for your child.

Lawlessness is a skyrocketing problem in all public schools, not just yours. And yes, theft is a crime. File a police report.

What can the school do about it? If you feel violated, call the police and have them meet you at the school.

Was he walking around with his backpack open? My kid does this and I've told him to keep it zipped so many times. It's so much easier to slip something out when you don't have to deal with unzipping. He has gotten his water bottle stolen a few times about then finds it later on in a random location. I think kids do it for "fun".

Kids definitely steal just for the sake of stealing and not necessarily because they want or need anything, especially non-poor kids. Ask any shop owner.

I suspect tons of comments on this forum are from those who protect unions, administrators and school board. No parent would defend the insanity.
