“Anti-prom” event

If a group of teens wants to plan something, fine, but this is not that.

Reminds me of how agitators planned "protests," and then we found out Russians in troll farms were planting the Facebook events. My point is this--Anyone could be planning this. Traffickers, a parent, a kid. We don't know.

Nope. My kid would not want to go that hot mess.

I thought these only happened when a school wouldn't allow gay couples, wouldn't allow a girl to wear a tux, would allow Trans gender people, etc., so they would have an alternative prom

This is not for any reason like that.

OP,

This is when you do your job as a parent and persuade/prevent them from going.

Or, if that's your style, trust that you've educated them well enough that they're not going to get into a car with a drunk driver, they're not going to drink in a glass they haven't poured themselves from a non-spikeable source, they're not going to take a pill (one poorly mixed fentanyl laced pill can kill), they're going to go to the bathroom with another friend...

But yes... this is real life, OP. You can't protect them for ever.

What are you talking about? No one thinks it’s a barn dance-I think it’s some gauche parent idiocy.

I know you do but it’s not and it’s a big yokel-y to think that

Why do you care?? Is your child not invited? I just don’t get it.

Are you familiar with the lengths schools go to in order to reduce the number of teens in the er getting their stomach pumped or dead in a drink driving accidents on prom night? Can you see why another prom with anonymous hosts snd zero safeguards might not be a good idea?

Nope. These are 17-18 year olds. They drink have sex and take drugs. The only think you can control is whether they think you are such a square so as not to talk to you, ie the quality of your relationship including after they go to college.
There I said it. Everyone knows it.

Op here-I don’t think it’s a trafficker event, I think it’s a “try-hard parent with an annoying child” event (that also is a legal liability.)

If you’re that worried sit in a car outside. But don’t ruin your child’s social life. Good lord, at 17 I was definitely going to the clubs. Yes top degrees, jobs, family etc followed. It was fun! When did the temperance brigade rear it’s suburban head??I missed it?

Genuinely feel bad for whatever happened that you are stuck with an adolescent’s worldview.

My God, parents are idiots. The liability associated with these types of events is nuts. When I was in HS a parent who hosted a party like this got put in jail. It's really sad if you think your relationship with your kid rides on your being "cool." Grow the f up and learn to say no.
