Chico's

How many women can away with wearing these?

I'm pretty thin and I love Chico clothes...on other people. They do not look good on me. I used to find things at Harold's that fit great. Sadly, they seem to have gone out business.

When I first saw Chicos I immediately thought librarian or a odd academic in her 50s and 60s. I kept seeing these stores around yet I hardly ever saw anyone in them, at least from a window, nor do I see people dressed this way. I used to think it was a front for something. I still wonder where these Chicos women are living.

I like J Jill and Macys. Lands End for pants that don't showcase my ass crack.

Have you tried strapless bras? I love the cami look and am a C cup, and you'd be amazed these days at the support offered by strapless bras--the strapless bras I have offer as much support as a regular bra, seriously. They're not your grandmother's strapless bra.

NP here. A C cup is NOT the same as an F No strapless is holding my big bad girls down. I'd love to wear all of the cute cami looks but can't either.

Chico's is not all bad. Yes, some of it looks "stuffy, bad shelf haircut, pissed off sour face" D.C. area woman, but there is some of it that compliments outfits well. Like most stores, you have to pick and choose what works.

Yes, and those of us in the Chico's demographic read this book as young adults. LOL

Some of Chico's clothes are downright tacky. Enough with the animal prints already! On the other hand, there are some really nice accessories and basics in the store. I find GREAT stuff there. It's just a matter of sifting through the dross.

I'm 41 and read that book when I was about 23. It was a great book, and the "social x-ray" term is SO suitable for so many women on this board. I've never bought anything at Chico's but I've been in the store a few times. My 70-year old mom shops there, and the clothes work for her. She always looks nicely put together. Like most stores, you have to pick and choose what works best for you.

Some Chicos clothing I find great--really basic matte jersey tanks, for example.

In my (slightly) younger group of friends the term 'social x-ray' has been replaced by 'bag of antlers'.
"She looks like her clothes are still hanging on the hangers. She is a bag of antlers."

And I almost always have one of those Chicos travelers wraps near me in the summer for going in and out of meetings in freezing rooms. They never wrinkle and I can hide them in my laptop bag so I don't like an urban sherpa.

OK, couple of things. Chico's certainly caters to an older clientele who may be overwight or just more matronly. Nothing wrong with that; there probably aren't enough stores that cater to that demographic. Chico's isn't for me, but I don't think they're really designed for the DCUM crowd. So, yeah, J. Jill or Chico's may not be your cup of tea if you're in good shape and in your 30's, but guess what? Older women wear clothes too!! And, by the way, if you like Chico's, you'll LOVE Stein Mart!

Chico's is changing their image and going younger. Clothing now starting to evolve differently with different cuts.

OK, I've never been to Chico's -- mostly b/c the window displays just aren't that appealing, but I also have to admit the reputation is a turn-off (DH swears he once overheard a woman walking by the one in Friendship Heights comment to her friend, "Chico's -- where fashion goes to die").

Nevertheless, I think a woman who's fit and who has a sense of style and a good eye for what flatters her can walk into just about any rag shop and find a treasure. So, yes, I still go to JCrew, Banana Republic and even (gasp!) tha GAP for basics. And I'm 50, so flame away fashionistas. Now, having said that, I'll also say that beyond the basics I have the best luck at Wear it Well in Bethesda and in the Individualist department at Nordstrom.

I'll be interested to see how Chico's tries to lean 'younger'.

And for those wondering who wears Chico's, I work in environments where I'm surrounded by it. Older women in higher ed/academia. Boxy, bold jackets are everywhere.

And I think Suze Orman may be a fan. Or at least the Kristen Wiig version of Suze certainly is.

I don't know about your " F bad girls", but mine don't need to be held down...they need to be held UP!!!
