That's a shame. I have several former colleagues who work there who are really smart people. I'm sure they will land on their feet but they did seem really happy there.

Don't compare biotech and pharma to the rest of tech and corporate though. Science companies need lab space.

Again, don't compare biotech and pharma to the rest of corporate. Nearly all major pharma companies have HQs in suburbia outside a major city. You need tons of lab space and need to meet environmental regs. You can find that kind of space and distance from population in urban centers. Your pushing pipettes, not pencils or keyboards.
