You’ll still get visits from the pediatrician and the hearing test consultant (got a crazy bill for that, watch out!) though.

I personally liked the food too!

This was my experience too. Also as a second time mom in 2022 they left me almost entirely alone (I had to call the nurse’s station for ibuprofen one time) — I had an easy delivery and was clearly comfortable nursing and caring for my baby, and I’m pretty sure they were badly understaffed that weekend — I was ready to leave at 8am Sunday but they couldn’t manage to get our paperwork together until 5pm.

This comment is not a detriment to GW — they were attentive with my first when I was very anxious and had no idea what I was doing — but more a comment in favour of their triage capabilities. Also in my experience the nurses and MUCH nicer and generally more helpful with breastfeeding support than the lactation consultants. If you want an LC, get an appointment with the breastfeeding center 1-2 days after you leave the hospital.

Thank you so much for your feedback! Definitely getting a LC once home. I like their food as well.

Was the hearing consult not covered? I will be sure to ask my insurance about it.

Thank you

It was covered but it was billed incorrectly to my insurance and it didn’t come in as GW hospital if I remember correctly. Definitely recommend checking those things beforehand. I also checked about anesthesiologist being in network for epidural and that went fine. Your nurse will also give you the birth certificate and other paperwork, DH took care of that.

If bf isn’t going well, they have a pump they can bring in and formula for baby too. I was too much of a nervous wreck as a FTM to send baby to nursery but that’s another option.

I clearly had a good pp experience but my nurses were wonderful. Taught me how to swaddle, diaper, and dress baby and also care for my 3rd degree tear.

I second scheduling other lc but my milk hadn't come in and my baby has low blood sugar so they made me supplement with formula almost immediately. One of the lactation consultants was decently helpful but the other one basically contradicted everything the nurses told me to do ( eg nurse wanted me to feed baby every 2 hours to help the blood sugar and the lc insisted I start triple feeding every 3 hours)....she also implied I may never be able to nurse due to fairly common things ( hypothyroid and pcos). The nurses were great- one in particular was wonderful.

They still haven’t fixed this? I had the SAME issue in 2016 and a colleague did in 2018. Their audiologist was not in network with our insurance and we both got crazy bills and had to fight since the screening is legally required for you to be able to leave the hospital. Ridiculous.

My experience at GW sucked terribly but this was many years ago and I went to Sibley for my second birth which was an incredible hospital. The postpartum nurses were top notch, the hospital was quiet, parking was a dream, the care I got was attentive, no “bad apple” nurses, and I felt well supported throughout the entire experience. For anyone considering the switch, I’m so glad I did - I had a high risk pregnancy and it was handled beautifully.
