I agree that motive would be interesting--some may be mobile drug labs, car parts, but most I suspect are joy rides. It's a power trip to take someone's stuff without permission and destroy it. Victimizing someone makes you the big man/woman for a few minutes.

I assumed when the 66 year old Uber driver was dragged to his death in broad daylight outside Nats Park in March 2021 that we would see a war on crime in this city. I was wrong.

But tourists clog the streets with their aimless wandering. It makes living in DC miserable to have to walk around them all the time.

Young men and women are stealing cars for gang initiations, for joy rides, to try to sell them for parts, because they are bored, angry, and have no future.
