I think that thread was in the tweens and teens section. And VA parents were sharing that even to get into a HS sports event, their child needed a phone with a special app to pay for entry. You couldn't just drop your kid off with a 20 dollar bill. They needed a phone and specific app to pay for entry or to purchase at the concession stand |
That is ridiculous and elitist. Not all kids can afford phones and cell service. |
At our FCPS high school events, you can pay only with cash at the door. So you can either do Etix online ahead of time (which has an app, I believe, but you don’t need it as long as you can access it online via web browser) OR you can pay only cash at the door. |
| And forgot to add, you can pay with cash at our concessions stands. My kid does it all the time and I prefer it so I can control how much he spends by giving him cash only. |
Thank you. That makes a lot more sense. I'll see if I can find the other thread, but the poster was asserting that cash would not be accepted |

This is the thread: https://www.dcurbanmom.com/jforum/posts/list/45/1111435.page#24318595
I find it horrible that some schools require a phone and app to do things like see a play, or support a team, or even buy a snack. I often drop my MS kid off to watch the HS sports games with a 20 dollar bill and agreement to be back in 3 hours. Bc she doesnt have a phone. If the HS had that smartphone model, she wouldn't be able to go to those events |
PP here. That would indeed be tough to be phone/app only. Maybe it depends on the individual school? I’ve helped with theater productions at our school too and the concessions accepted cash. |

The tickets really vary by school and area. Most places still take cash but some are online-only. Postseason tournaments have been trending toward online-only as a lot of the associations made deals with the online ticket sites. I think both VHSL and MPSSAA require tickets to be purchased through GoFan at the state tournament level. WCAC basketball tournament has been all online tickets the last couple years.
Have not encountered a cashless concession stand yet but I'm sure it will become more common. |
