I’ve observed that truly affluent families are blasé about where their kids go to college

You should watch the "Born Rich" documentary, made by Jamie Johnson (of J&J fortune). A classic.

+1 can you imagine the ‘truly affluent’ sending their kid to Alabama. Op, the ‘truly affluent’ have very likely never been within 1,000 miles of Alabama

Yes, I can imagine the truly affluent sending their child there, because I've seen it happen. You, on the other hand, obviously have no idea what you're talking about.

DCUM is the epicenter of the anxiety-ridden and boring rich.

Some of you missed the post in the real estate forum which included postings of few houses under $1M to be near Ole Miss.

There are absolutely rich people in Omaha, Milwaukee, Columbus, Birmingham and Detroit.

It’s easier to be rich in the south: low taxes and $1 million buys you a giant, nice house instead of a 2 bedroom $hitshack. But money doesn’t matter as much as who you’re related to.

Kids want to go to warm fun schools now.

I am the poster who said they aren’t the truly affluent. I wasn’t trying to imply that the truly affluent would not send their kids to Alabama or LSU. Because they would.

My point was that the truly affluent don’t really care at all.

The people the op describes who send their kids to Alabama and LSU and have them join fraternities and sororities care very much about where they go and what they join.

Of course they don’t care where their kids go to college. Their kids will never have to support themselves because they will live off their family wealth.

Yeah, that’s the catch. You can’t buy your way into these circles. It matters which high school you went to, who your dad is, which country club your family belongs to.

Exactly. And all but the very most-connected among the group we’re discussing apply the same anxiety to sorority rush that DC strivers apply to the Ivy app process.

Fascinating, isn't it? There are places like this all over the country. And DC is full of people who didn't fit in where they grew up, so they came here to start over.

EVERY area has a pecking order. Whether it be based on sports, academics, your dad’s last name, what kind of designer purse you wear, how many cows your family has, where you went to high school, your gang affiliation, and I could go on.

The true affluent don’t go into STEM fields. They study art and fashion design.

You mean the KIDS of the truly affluent. That's because they're not smart enough.
