98. Oldest living president.

His legacy will be what he has done post-presidency. Unlike many of his successors, he chose to use his fame as a president to raise money for very worthy causes instead of giving speeches and writing books to gain wealth and build mansions for himself. I have a lot of respect for him.

This!

And that’s why people hold him in such high regard. He is truly humble man driven by his faith who walked the walk, putting public service and charitable efforts above personal wealth. Moreover, his charitable efforts were tangible rather than fluff. He rolled up his sleeves and actually made a difference.

No other past president comes close when comparing morals and service.

I hope he transitions peacefully and I hope his family finds comfort in the fact that he is admired and beloved and his legacy will live on in the history books.

Jimmy Carter is a real Christian.

What a decent man and what an incredible legacy.
Thank you, President Carter.

Of all places, The Onion nails it.

Thirty-ninth president of the United States, whose four years in office were somehow the least impressive of his entire life. A graduate of the U.S. Naval Academy, prosperous farmer, nuclear engineer, reformist, and governor of Georgia prior to becoming president in 1977, Carter strangely hit the most pronounced lull in his career during his single term as the nation’s chief executive. While his presidency was marked by occasional successes such as the Camp David Accords, Carter’s professional life really took off again when he left office. In these years, he founded a human rights nonprofit that won him the Nobel Peace Prize, went on international diplomatic missions, and became the public face of Habitat for Humanity, worthy accomplishments that made his four years as president of the United States a blip in an otherwise distinguished lifetime of public service."

So sad. I visited Americus for a Habitat for Humanity event to build houses. I drove past his house many times in the hopes of seeing him! (The signs said not to stop.)

It will be very interesting to see how certain members of Congress choose to behave when he dies.

Don’t do that. Focus on Jimmy. His family.

This sums up how I feel about Jimmy Carter: he’s “good people.”

He and his family didn’t profit from office, that’s for certain

“What happened next Mr. Barnes has largely kept secret for nearly 43 years. Mr. Connally, he said, took him to one Middle Eastern capital after another that summer, meeting with a host of regional leaders to deliver a blunt message to be passed to Iran: Don’t release the hostages before the election. Mr. Reagan will win and give you a better deal.

Mr. Carter’s camp has long suspected that Mr. Casey or someone else in Mr. Reagan’s orbit sought to secretly torpedo efforts to liberate the hostages before the election, and books have been written on what came to be called the October surprise. But congressional investigations debunked previous theories of what happened.

Mr. Connally did not figure in those investigations. His involvement, as described by Mr. Barnes, adds a new understanding to what may have happened in that hard-fought, pivotal election year. With Mr. Carter now 98 and in hospice care, Mr. Barnes said he felt compelled to come forward to correct the record.”

This borders on treason. Those prisoners ostensibly were held in captivity for an extra 6 months just to help Reagan. We know they were tortured and violated while in captivity. Wtf.

Yeah, the article ends with this quote:

“I just want history to reflect that Carter got a little bit of a bad deal about the hostages,” he said. “He didn’t have a fighting chance with those hostages still in the embassy in Iran.”

Like the hostages themselves didn't matter one bit. It's all about the people in power and everybody else is a stupid pawn in their schemes. Politicians are truly scum.

I don’t think it’s suitable or sensible to both sides this one, especially not when we lost the second term of one of the most decent humans who ever occupied the Oval. The GOP did this to sink Carter and it worked; why it’s not made a bigger deal of, I really don’t know, but it allows people like you to say that it’s just “people in power,” and you’re saying it on a thread about Jimmy Carter for gosh sakes.

GOP colluding with foreign powers. Seems to be a recurring theme.
