Glass Front Doors - Do You Have One?

Aside from the privacy part, the doors are not safe. As in glass makes it flimsy.
We changed our door with a solid core and a speakeasy. Two deadbolts and a handle lock. No one is getting in.

If someone wants to get in a deadbolt isn't stopping them.

+ 1 We are also elevated so people can only see in if they are at the door. The door faces the stairs and hall. We love the extra light. It is only annoying if I am already dressed for bed and then realize I need to get something from downstairs or if my kid takes a shower and comes up in a towel. It also means you can’t delay opening the door if neighbor or friends show up, you have to open whether you are ready or not. But overall it is fine.

How long would you keep people waiting on your porch if you didn't have a glass door?

We have one. We tolerate it. It’s great during the day. But kinda creepy at night. But either way, we like it a lot.

I have had glass but it’s beveled and frosted in a pattern. I guess people can see in but it’s just an empty foyer.

My neighbors put them in during a recent renovation. DH and I have talked about how ridiculous they are. Although I love the look, there’s no privacy - we can see everything when we walk by taking our dog out. Their dog loves it, though, and always sits right in front of them.

Do your neighbors not have windows?

I have one and like the natural light I get from it. Plus my house is on a hill so no one can see directly from street. But I have to say as a foreigner (I am French) it took some getting used to.

It seems so flimsy, anyone could break in in 2 minutes by breaking one of the glass panels. In my country I don’t think we have that type of doors in cities where the burglary rates are anywhere close to the DMV (maybe in quiet villages but then people tend to have walls and gates).

To me those glass doors are a symbol of what I cannot quite grasp about the US. The statistics tell me my neighborhood is dangerous, but the way people live (glass doors, simple locks, no walls around the yard etc…) makes me think people feel very safe (which is great)

We have a set up sort of like this. I love the look of the natural light during the day, but still want privacy at night. Also, we have a glass break sensor nearby as well with monitored alarm system.

We have one. Had a regular door when we bought the house and swapped it for glass. I love it. I like the looks of it. It added so much light, which we really needed. We’re far back on a private street, so not much traffic goes by. And it only really looks into our foyer. I don’t know, when we were debating it, I kind of felt like if someone wants into your house bad enough, they’re going to get in. There are windows and glass french doors and sliding doors all along the back. The front door didn’t make me feel like my previously impenetrable fortress was suddenly dangerous. But it’s very much personal comfort, preference, and a bit of circumstance (what you can see inside, street traffic, etc).

Can't you get like a honeycomb shade or the like to pull down at night? Treat it like a window.

Less than a minute. I might want to finish typing a sentence or adjust my hair or make sure I don’t have snot coming out of my nose. But if they are at the door they can often see me and I have to basically acknowledge them right away.

LOL, why TF would you buy a gun instead of a new front door? You need help.

Was way cheaper. I do need help - need door cash! 🙏
