Geographically Pakistan is South Asia, not the Middle East, but anything by the Pakistani writer Mohsin Hamid is good -- The Reluctant Fundamentalist, Exit West, Moth Smoke.

I wanted to love this, but I just couldn't get into it. The Iran parts were interesting, but it seemed to mostly be about typical family squabbles. I made it about halfway through. Did it get better?

Kamila Shamsie is the female Hamid-- but I think she's better than he is because she's so much less pretentious and doesn't try to over-reach.
