Jobs where you live in the US but periodically travel abroad or work for a foreign co/org

My DoD agency has international TDY’s ranging from 7 weeks to a year. COVID quashed then but they’re ramping back up. The one year assignments were gold because they pay per diem, cover the hotel and rental car and there’s mandatory overtime. Those long term assignments probably aren’t coming back. But overall it’s a work hard, play hard opportunity.

If you work for one of the international development organizations or consulting firms you travel abroad pretty often depending on your job.

What do you mean by “periodically?” I am a researcher and typically travel abroad for work ~2x a year for weeklong conferences. I gather from the responses here that you are interested in experiences with international travel that is more frequent than that, though.

I started traveling in my graduate program and have continued to travel as much as I want for as long as I like, incl living abroad, in my tenure track position at an R1 university
