I'm curious what kind of jobs allow you to live in the US and periodically travel abroad--or allow you to work abroad for a stint.
I know this isn't very specific and is largely dependent on your degree/expertise. Nonetheless, I am curious to hear from professionals who have BTDT. What do you do, who do you work for, and where do you travel or sometimes base your home? |
| Recruiting - international job fair type events. |
| With the big 4, you apply internally to do a stint abroad for 6-months or longer when you’re fairly junior. |
| Civil servant at USAID. Joined as a PMF and travel to Africa often. I love it |
| Marketing / sales / customer relations in an international industry. Our business development people travel internationally a lot, and often have the opportunity to take a longer stint near a specific customer if they want to |
| What is a PMF for USAID? |
Presidential management fellow |
| State Dept jobs often have TDY, implementation for USAID or State Dept, company with foreign offices... |
Which is crucial to career advancement. |
| I worked for the North American branch of an international company. Traveled often to our HQ, which was in another country. Many of my peers transferred btw regions, getting their first job w the co in their home country and then applying internally when an equivalent role opened up in another country/region. |
| PP again. If you get a job w an international company, it doesnt matter what your job role is tbh. Im in marketing but have colleagues in all fields who have been able to move internationally, either for a short or long time. HR, customer care, sales, business development, project management, IT stuff. Its all about getting into a company w a large international presence that truly values hiring from within. |
| Many civilian government and military positions offer both opportunities. |
| I work for a large international health NGO and travel internationally about once a quarter. I previously lived overseas working for a similar organization. |
| I work for a federal agency and pre-COVID traveled 6-8 times per year internationally for mission-specific meetings, conferences, etc. Most trips 4-5 days, 10 days at the outside. Only travelled twice last year but now things seem back to normal frequency. |
