What is UMD like on the weekends?

Looks rough (laughs hysterically) but what standard? Watts Riots 1992? That part of route one has very little interest for students - IF the student's party in College Park then it's route one near the main gates and south of campus, or go out to eat. There are many new apartments and more being built around campus.

What exactly are you looking for?

We live 5 miles away and two of our kids live on campus. We've got most everything nearby. The only thing my kids wish was closer is that silly overpriced cat cafe in Georgetown. Someone should open one of those in College Park. They would make a fortune.

It's so easy to head into downtown DC from College Park. My UMD junior has done that many times on the weekends -- plenty to do that's interesting and free.

LOL. I had 3 kids go there and they rarely came home. There is plenty to do and with so many kids there, it is pretty easy to find friends if you want them.

Have you had a chance to visit yet?

A sample of activities:

Various parties
Shows—plays and concerts at Clarice Smith Center
Sports—basketball arena, football games, soccer, and more
Hiking in Greenbelt Park, Rock Creek
Golf across the street
Bowling on campus
Movies on campus
Hanging with friends to grab dinner or coffee at a place on route one
Concerts on McKeldin Mall

Too many to list.

Omg, seriously? Clutch my pearls!

Is it the piano store, car dealership, animal hospital Lidl, or diner you don’t like?

That piano store's been having going out of business sale since i attended umd in 80s. Seriously. We joke it's a hidden money laundering operation by drug cartels.

Its inside the beltway of the Capital of the western world, 30 min from Annapolis, 2hrs to the beach. Greek system, bars and parties. Once I went I never went home and my parents started complaining.

Hey, OG I didn't say I feared my safety,. It old and the roads were torn to hell. Just wasn't much to look at. Looking at Google maps, i see route 1 south of campus looks like it was more of the stuff that may be of more interest to a college student.

Its a lot newer than it was and even the shady motel complex is going to be replaced soon by another mixed use development. As if we need more of those..but yes, not a lot a college kids would go up that way for much unless they lived up that way.

And yes, esp the SB right lane is currently a complete disaster.

But its going to be a rough year between 193 and main entrance, the road work south of campus is nearly done but N of of the main entrance its now in full swing and will be for sometime. It will be nice in a year or so though. Then Town Hall and that little shopping center is going to become another mixed use house of sticks on a garage......yay.

The purple line work has started again. UMD will continue to be torn up.
