Our nanny choked at our house today.

Nice trolling.

She was eating a grape when she started choking. The same grapes she served our toddlers but instead of being cut into fours she ate one whole and choked. We just watched the security camera facing the kitchen and you can literally see the panic set in and she grasps her hands around her neck and stands up trying to cough. She tried to perform the Heimlich on herself with our chair but failed. That’s when she walks out of frame of the camera.

She walked upstairs into our bedroom and banged on the door where my husband said he opened the door to her purple faced and about to pass out. Thankfully we trained for this before we had kids, but never did he expect to perform the Heimlich on an adult. Let alone our nanny. It came out fairly quickly he said and she was ok. Crying but ok. He rushed downstairs where she had left our twins (14 months old) in the high chair where they were eating like nothing happened.

We let her go home early and said maybe she should go to urgent care. Not sure if she did.

I’m glad everything is ok but honestly it makes me scared to have her back here tomorrow. What if DH wasn’t here? What would have happened to my kids? What if they choker? Fell? How can we prevent this again?

Short answer you can't prevent choking. I choked on meat any spouse saved me. Perhaps you can suggest going to cpr for her sake.

Your post does not come off as very caring.

One thing that is good to know generally is whether your locality has text-to-911 enabled and how to do it. If you have an emergency by yourself where you cannot speak, knowing how to text to 911 can be invaluable. If I ever started truly choking while home alone, that is the first thing I would do, before even trying to heimlich myself, to get ambulance moving asap. If I’ve managed to dislodge whatever I’m choking on before they arrive, so be it.

One other tip, it is easy to create your own text replacements on an iPhone. I have one programmed into my phone so if I type 911choke it auto corrects to “[my home address]. Ambulance. Choking.” In an emergency I can open my texts, type 911 in the recipient line, type that phrase in the message field and hit send.

Wow, OP. That’s super generous of you. But I guess you’ll be taking that out of her PTO. You realize this could happen to anyone, right?

op has to be a troll. No one is that evil.

She has. I’ve seen her certificate. She’s gone through training 3 times since she was 17. That’s what’s scary. We didn’t hire someone off the streets.

I used to be a nanny. I did training and recertification every 2 years. Best practices change and you have to stay on top of it.

She didn't hire someone "off the streets!" But she told her "maybe you should go to urgent care!"

I can't believe she wasn't able to clear her own blockage. That's what would give me pause

Just because someone has gone through training doesn’t mean they’ll be able to successfully do the Heimlich for themselves. She did all the right steps and then got help, so I don’t know what you’re complaining about.

?? You have to bend over a chair and push forcefully. It’s not easy.

Maybe OP needs to get better chairs.

How would staying on top of training help in this situation?

It's not like practicing self-heimlich is part of the course.

Your children seem slow. Why didn’t they help or text dad to come down. Bizarre. Are they hitting their other milestones?

Op you better only have smoothies when you're alone with your kids. You might choke and not be able to dislodge it yourself.

She left the kids in the kitchen while she rushed upstairs for help? What nerve. I guess she should have taken the time to get them out of their chairs and take them with her.

I hope you are a troll.
