Tell me you are a Trumpy without telling me you are a Trumpy |
Because taking 162 AP's is the only way you can show colleges you are serious since MCPS grading system gives everyone high grades |
Wow, that's extreme. My HS health classes were some of my favorite and guess what - I have health-related BS/MS/PHD. |
OK, but beyond the ones that satisfy a grad requirement, then those are the electives of your choice. |
That’s great it was an option for you but hate that a full year is required. |
The more a kid can control his or her schedule the happier they are. |
Well I hate math and I hate that even if you are really advanced starting in 9th grade Algebra 2, you have to take all 4 years of math at a high school level. 95% of the population never uses calculus, but 100% of the population need to learn physical and mental health, as well as nutrition |
Yes and the moms here have kids that take all AP's for their electives so they take health in the summer. Imagine being that uptight and focused on college that you hate 4 years of your life and can't enjoy summers either? Then they go to college and realize no one gives a crap about grades and courses and it is connections, work ethic, and communication skills that get you the best jobs. And no one cares about what college you went to and your GPA. |
My kids have had 3 full years in middle school and they do all that in advisory too. At some point enough is enough. A finance class would make more sense. They keep repeating the same material. My kid is in one sport multiple days a week outside MCPS. They aren't athletic otherwise and miserable in PE. |
You mean, a parent like me. Yup, I'm keeping my busy. Keeps them out of trouble. They will do a mix of camps, summer school, swim team and other things. Why does it have to be all or nothing. Mine wants to take the electives in HS. Why deny them those vs. another year of health? You need things like calculus depending on your major. |
That's advanced, really advanced is Algebra 2 in 8th grade. Here's an idea. If your kid is having mental health issues, get them addressed as a parent. That is your job. It's also your responsibility to teach nutrition at home and have them exercise. Stop expecting MCPS to parent your kids. If you are a math major, computer science, engineering, etc, you need calculus. That is way more than 5%. |

I am an ME and I never use calculus
Also, you are advocating for less nutrition, physical activity, and mental health learning for more AP classes, correct? |
| Calculus is part of a whole, well-rounded education. One thing I love about the US is that high school is not job training. We require 4 years of math to prepare students for any career they may choose. Regardless if they think they will never need it. Plenty of people change majors in college or later in life change careers. We don’t want a math choice at 16-18 to stand in the way of career advancement. |
Ours is very political in terms of some of the teachings and it is overboard. I'm as liberal as they come but its getting to the point where it's doing more harm than good for some kids. For the second class, home econ or financial literacy makes far more sense. My kids have had it constantly in middle school and they just repeat the same stuff over and over again. |
