Turnover @ Lowell???

PP-

You have to ask yourself, though, what is potentially making the current jobs at Lowell less attractive? These things don't happen in a vacuum.

PP-Agreed! Lowell need to find a JK teacher, 2 Kindergarten teachers, 2 Second grade teachers, a 4th grade teacher and a 5th grade teacher. That is 7 classroom teachers for a school that does not even go to 12th grade. Something about the working environment (i.e. support, salary & benefits, etc.) for the teachers seems to be very questionable. This type of turnover does not seem comparable to other DC independent schools. What is going on Lowell?

Some positions were "dissolved"
-curriculum coordinator
-swimming teacher
-swimming assistant
Add 3 people to that.

Were the teachers who left long tenured there? Were they some of the better teachers?

I think parents can and should be legitimately concerned about teacher turnover if it appears to be too high. I think PPs question is legitimate even if reasons have been provided for departures. The concern is essentially whether any or most of the reasons provided to parents are pretext.

What is not correct? We go to Lowell and the PP seemed accurate.

JK: moving out of state
K: Lowell parent decides to not to return as a teacher, is replaced by a teacher who filled in for a 1st grade teacher this year who took family leave.
1st: teacher who took family leave returns
2: one moving, other prefers shorter commute or whatever
4th: one left for GDS
5th: one left for Ghana

Of all of these, maybe one of the 2nd grade teachers was unhappy...that is life at work! As Lowell freely admits, their salaries are mid-level for local independent schools, so that may certainly be a factor. I don't think the turnover is great, but I am not as concerned as in years past when people seemed to be leaving because of unhappiness with admin or whatever.

Sounds like at least of those teachers (K parent, 2nd shorter commute, 4th GDS) deliberately chose to leave Lowell, as opposed to having outside circumstances (such as moving out of the area). That seems to be a bit concerning, no? I also heard the computer teacher left for another local school... can you confirm?

Don't forget the new Assistant Head. There has been quite a bit of admin turnover in my time there (5 years now). I think every administrator has changed in that time. Hopefully they're pruning the bad fruit, so to speak, but its hard to tell until we see who the new people are.

@19:34 Yes, the computer teacher left for Bullis. These are not tenure teachers leaving or bad ones. They are some of the really good/better teachers that have left. You gotta ask yourself about what is going on besides what the admin is telling parents.

What do people gain from posting inflammatory and uninformed speculation regarding a school you may or may not have child attending?

If you have a child attending school there, why do this in a public forum and create a bad impression of the school.

If you don't have a child there, why do you care?

Some parents in this community spend so much time and energy judging others, attempting to destroy reputations and causing mischief.

It's sad and pathetic.

Who is attempting to give a bad impression? I see a group of concerned parents attempting to better ascertain what is happening at their school. What is wrong with that? If something is going wrong at the school, discussing that is not giving a "bad impression"... it's actually the proper impression. If there are other explanations, that is what is being explored here. The school has not given sufficient answers so people are trying to more.

Agree, but you gotta view this board as infotainment.

You don't think talking on a public forum about a possible high teacher turnover rate and questioning "what's going on at this school is it the administration" is bad PR? As a parent and community member wouldn't you want to support your kid'd school, bring in committed families? If so, I would suggest you and ask these questions in a private, rather than public, forum. Because now you're not doing anyone any favors.

From,

A parent who doesn't have a kid at the school but sure hell would think twice about applying.

First off, I've asked these questions to the school and have felt as if I've gotten the run around.

Second, why is it my job to do the schools favors? If the school has a PR problem, it's not because something posted on a blog, but because of something they are doing. It's not my responsibility to recruit for the school or manage its image. My job is to best advocate for my child and sometimes that starts with talking with other parents. I've had these discussions in private and now that they have become public (I am not the OP), I am engaging in them here to try to figure out what is going on at DS's school.

one thing to say..the K teacher left teaching at Lowell but has returned to the Lowell Board and her kids both attend, so clearly has no issue with the school.

I could go on about what I feel about each teacher that left (and I am not bummed about most!) but more importantly I am excited about the quality of the replacements that they have hired. If those work out, the school will most certainly get stronger than i feel it already is.
