GW unlikely - really?

It says W&M and GW = pretty confident
Swarthmore = unlikely

Please recalculate with 4.0 = A for general education classes, 4.5 = A for honors classes, and 5.0 = A for AP/IB classes.

MCPS overweights honors classes, so you aren’t comparing apples with apples.

OP here. Then her gpa is unchanged. Hmm, the VA calculation is better than MCPS’. I always thought it was weird to weigh Honors the same as APs.

Even if you applied for FA you can still get released from ED agreement

Parents need to wake up and forget about comparing FA when all acceptances are in!

Georgetown SFS v. College, each has their admissions priorities

OP here. Financial aid is not a consideration. Yes, perhaps we messed up, we are foreigners and don't know all the ins and outs of this. She applied to Georgetown SFS.

To answer other PPs:

1. She has the AP exam awards, one school award for having taken a challenging course load, and a government certificate of proficiency in her native language, because it was not taken through her public school. She took Latin at school to fulfill the language requirement and is in AP Latin this year.
2. The ethnicity box she checked does not reflect all her multi-culturalism from various countries, which she expanded on in her essay. But if URM just means Black or Hispanic, then no, she is not URM.

What do you mean by your answer in 2?

OP here. Sorry, I don't want to identify our family. It's that three of her grandparents come from three different countries on different continents. Her family members served on opposing sides of WWII on both Western and Pacific fronts. Another side of the family escaped a different war and suffered war refugee privations. She is the first American in the family. She explained in her essay that she loves history and international affairs because of that.

Ok. To answer your question, she isn't a URM for college admissions. A PP broke down the designations.

Swarthmore is also a reach, for everybody. My NMSF DD was rejected. Of course, some people get in, and maybe your DD will be one of the lucky ones.

I think GW is as close to certain as one can be in college admissions, W&M is likely, and Swathmore a crapshoot but she is qualified. Good luck to her, she sounds awesome!

We are from Maryland my 2020 applicant with 1580 and 4.7from MCPS was accepted to W & M RD. He visited and interviewed on campus.

My 2022 child with 4.8 and 1490 was accepted at Swarthmore RD

Neither of my children applied to GW

So three applications are not enough. To OP, you need to add more schools. Talk to your college counselor. The PP is correct tgat most decisions are now made at the SCEA, ED and EA points. There are many schools still accepting applications. Post on College Confidential and Reddit

Did she visit and interview with W&M? That makes a big difference either way.

Are there safety schools or is this the entire list?

Oops, just reread your post - pls disregard the second question.

OP here. She spent time on campus in middle school during a Model UN conference and loved it, as well as Colonial Williamsburg, and mentioned that in her application. But she did not visit recently. Do you think she needs to visit again and interview, or is it too late now?

She has two safety school acceptances, and is fine with both. However they don't have the exchange programs she's most interested in that would fit her interests, and frankly, neither are known for their international affairs departments.

DP. DD has similar stats, but that’s low for Swarthmore? She has other things of note on her app, but these stats seem ok to me. What am I missing? (Serious question, not snarky)

Any of the three really could go either way (Elliott School is a much tougher admit than GW as a whole). Be excited about UMD Honors and/or her other option (Dickinson?) and open to either having additional options or not.

Nonsense. She’s in at UMD Honors. She’s fine. She doesn’t need to scramble. You all need to chill out.
