What is Hans Riemer’s political future?

3. He handed out outrageous subsidies for millionaires who donated to his first campaign.

That all takes a lot of skill (especially no. 3 — he got a lot of progressives to embrace trickle down economics) and this site doesn’t give Hans enough credit.

I don’t give him credit because he’s a nihilist who understands how to exploit a specific type/class of UMC white people and literally no one else. I have spoken to many people who support him and my conclusion is that its basically out of affinity. They somehow believe that he is just like them and that he’s well intentioned. They’re people who are too busy to care to follow-up on whether he’s actually done anything. And too affluent to care that much because whatever he does or does not do has no affect on them. Perhaps these are the skills of the classic low morals salesman, but no one credits it they disdain it.

He also managed to garner the support of the loud, myopic online YIMBY folks, despite being the ultimate Takoma Park homeowner (and landlord) himself, yet wanted to push thrive through to other neighborhoods with his crony, Casey Anderson.

But that niche also has a ceiling and he found it: 20%

I don’t credit the fundraising too much because it’s mostly the local real estate and development community. They knew he couldn’t win but were hoping he would take votes from Elrich, which he did, and were signaling to other CMs that if you play ball this is what we can do for you. The other half of his donors are these rubes who also probably think Matt Yglesias is insightful and giving him $20 per month is worthwhile. Neither of these groups are particularly known for showing any loyalty.
