| My spider sense says this a catch up after Covid. Was supposed to phased in but they delayed and are now trying to catch up. |
Ah. The middle school I was at made that change at least years ago. I didn't realize that wasn't a system wide change then. |
MCPS has much higher standards and expectations than the state. It is after all one of the leading schools systems in the USA. |
13 teachers became NBTC in 2021 and 72 renewed.18 in 2020 with 28 renewals. Some probably didn't have to renew. There's not enough MCPS teachers who are NBCT to require this for CS and TLs, especially with NBTC renewals now at 5 years instead of 10. https://news.montgomeryschoolsmd.org/staff-bulletin/thirteen-educators-achieve-national-board-certification-in-2021/ https://news.montgomeryschoolsmd.org/staff-bulletin/total-of-18-educators-achieve-national-board-certification-in-2020/ |
There are 70 who achieved in 2022 and 992 overall right now. https://www.nbpts.org/nbct-directory/ Part of the Blueprint for education legislation that was passed includes funding for highly qualified teachers. https://blueprint.marylandpublicschools.org/nbct/ There are recommendations for changes in career ladder structure for the future, which includes NBC as part of the "Lead Teacher" pathway. https://dls.maryland.gov/pubs/prod/Educ/BlueprintOverview.pdf (slide 12) So, although this round of CS and TL position shuffling may not include the requirement to be a NBCT, having a regularly occurring process of reapplying for those positions opens the possibility of that eventually becoming a requirement. |
Won't happen anytime soon. Too many shortages to make this a requirement on top of everything else |
Never, ever going to happen actually. No one wants these positions to begin with, so they'll make the requirements even stricter? We need competent teachers. We don't need to make it harder for people to work in the district or harder for the people who already do. We should be looking at the individual as a whole, not as just someone who has an additional credential added to their name. |
yup, exactly |
992 includes people who have expired certifications, so they wouldn't count. |
Maryland Blueprint and Teacher Career laddering that MCPS is working on. |
Didn't Maryland Blueprint come out in 2021? MCPS MS Reform was well before. |
| Most staff are just doing NBCT for the pay (and pension) bump. Once you are are the top of the pay scale/masters+60 there is no way to get a pay raise. So you have loads of teachers in the 40’s and 50’s no better option but NBCT. Just more hoops for teachers to get a deserved pay raise. Salaries are 20% behind inflation over the last 20 years. |
| At my school the principal clearly used the reshuffle to push out someone he doesn’t like. That’s his prerogative but I feel bad for the teacher who held the position for years. How often will they be doing the reorg and making staff reapply? |
