NY/NJ Pizza - willing to drive, where to go?

New Haven style is the best. Pepe's at Montgomery Mall is the best but still not as good as the original in New Haven, CT.

I am not a huge NY pizza fan but found New Haven style to be very underwhelming. It was fine but I wouldn't make an effort to get it again.

I do like the NY style pizza at Fontina Grill in Gaithersburg/Rockville. And Mama Lucia's is good. But again, I am not an expert on NY pizza.

lol Don't panic New Yorker here, have you tried mama lucia's in fairfax or Valentino’s in Alexandria, definitely pretty darn close.

Where would you go? I'm willing to drive as I have time this weekend, even if it's northern Md or even Delaware, though not going so far as to you to NJ lol. Obviously open to local options too. Need not be anything special, just someplace clean and good pizza. Where would you go?

You're willing to drive to DE, but not to NJ? It's like 12 extra miles.

Lol true but not being from the NJ/DE line, I don't offhand know where to go there either. After crossing the DE line, I'd be driving another hour north - and I was hoping for a rec in southern Del, just over the MD border.

I am a firm believer that if you are from NY or NJ, the best pizza you'll ever have is from your hometown pizza place (for me, Pizza Como in Clinton, NJ). But, out of curiosity, I have found the Italian Store to be an acceptable substitute (certainly better than a 2 hour drive). You don't agree?

New p here, I will add to this that I think everyone wants their hometown pizza. I’m from the Midwest and miss pizza from my hometown. I don’t expect DC to reproduce it though. My family who lives here in DC thinks it’s horrible. I get it when I go visit.

For NY style, I second Valentino's in Alexandria.
I'm from the Midwest too and miss my hometown pizza, thin crust Chicago style. Yum! Haven't found it anywhere here.

Oh, and I forgot Johnny's New York Style Pizzeria in Alexandria, VA.

Grew up in NJ, been in MD for a while now. You just need to accept the fact that you won’t find anything close to NY/NJ pizza here and you’re good.
Another “pretty good” one is CSNY pizza on rockville pike.

I read about this place on here, and I was randomly at the Nike outlet the other day and it showed up on my list of nearby restaurants. Is it really good?

I think that Flippin Pizza is pretty close to NY pizza.

Not Flippin and definitely not Mama Lucia's. Agree, miss my hometown pizza!

Shut your mouth. Mamma Lucia’s is awesome. Mamma Rosa the owner is from Italy. Her pizza is the closest to NY pizza that I’ve found down here. Her food is fantastic.

I do not think that Tony's is that great and the owner is an AH.

No way. Mamma L’s is okay but the crust is flavorless (at a minimum they need to add salt), I don’t love the sauce, and it is rarely baked enough to melt the cheese properly.

New Yorker here and agreed, will also add there was too much cheese and it was super globby. I ordered it once based off of recs here and I thought it was like a higher quality Sbarro, nothing like NY pizza.

The Tonys in Fair Lakes mall is much more consistent than the one in Oakton. The Luciano’s in Oakton can be hit or miss, but when it’s good it’s great. There used to be a Luciano’s in Fairoaks and that one was bette the Oakton store. The Mama Lucia on a good day (Faircity mall) is the best of the lot.

I was in ALDIs the other day and picked up a frozen pizza for a quick bite for my kids and decided to try something new from their frozen food case, the picture looked good, thin crust, uncured peperoni, golden cheese. I tried a small sliver and omg it was the best pizza I’ve had in a very long time, blew all of the above out of the water. Rosati’s Chicago style thin crust. It’s a chain, there is one location in MD, so I’ve decided I have to road trip At some point to give the fresh version a try.

Clearing space in my freezer so I can buy a fee more frozens this weekend.
