Favorite "chapter books" for new readers in 2nd grade?

Sideways Stories from Wayside school is great because each chapter is a self-contained story.

The answer this is always Dog Man.

Geronimo Stilton (kinda mystery), I hated them but my kid loves it.

Dogman. My child learned to read with Dogman. It's silly, a graphic novel, definitely not literature but it was exciting enough to keep him going. I think he didn't know 20-30% of the words the first book, but figured them all out by book 3.

Nate the Great (very easy)

Yes - Dragon Masters, also a series (I think from the U.K.) called Beast Quest. It has a lot of books and is really fun.

In between the silliness of dog man is some really great storytelling about family, love and the power of forgiveness.
