Favorite "chapter books" for new readers in 2nd grade?

Anonymous
My 7 year old is finally really starting to read!! Woohoo! He's reading pretty much independently but sitting nearby in the same room while I also read (my book). I want to get him hooked into SUPER easy "chapter books" but some of the books I've seen are still pretty hard. I think he can read independently for about 20-30 minutes right now. The "chapter" book he read today is like 1 chapter per 3 pages with big font.

I'm not sure if we're looking for a specific genre at this point but something obviously very fast moving for him until he improves more.

Thanks!!

Try the scholastic Branches series. My new reader got hooked on reading for pleasure thanks to Dragon Masters.

There is nothing wrong with picture books for new readers. There are some amazing picture books with great stories that might feel comfortable for a new reader. I know my DS was intimidated by the idea of chapter books even though he could handle them.

+1. These are fantastic. Kingdom of Wrenly is a bit easier and good as well.

My son got hooked on the Magic Treehouse series around that age. They are short and easy to read, and there's more than a hundred books in the series. He outgrew the books long before he read them all.

Thanks! I'm looking up the different branches series. My son feels SUPER proud of himself when he reads "another chapter" independently so he loves it!! We read lots of picture books together still though but this will definitely encourage him.

My daughter loves the Thea Stilton books and there is a similar series c
About Geronimo Stilton. The chapters are not crazy short but there are tons of pictures; they are kind of like graphic novels

My Father's Dragon was always what we pulled out as first chapter books. There are two more, which aren't quite as good.

The Boxcar Children and its innumerable sequels.

Geronimo Stilton is OK. He'll probably like it.

My 2nd grader loves
The dog series by James Patterson
Ricky Ricotta series by the guy that wrote Dogman. Sorry, it’s early and his name is escaping me.

He also loved dogman, but when he read aloud i realized that he was skipping/guessing a lot of the harder words

Thanks everyone! Turns out my 2nd grader has heard of the Dragon Master's series through other kids. There's another one that a friend's parent lent to us a few months ago, "Firehawk". It's one of the branches series and he looked at it and it seems a bit too challenging for him right now but I think in another month or two so I've got some great ideas!!

I ended up buying him the first few books of "Kung Fu Chicken" which is one of the easiest series through scholastic branches. I think he will progress quickly! I'm so excited he is finally catching on and enjoying reading himself!

also- my son actually took a book with him to school today to finish reading on the bus/at school!! I'm so proud of him! I've saved all these book suggestions and my mom will be checking out Unique lol to see what's there. I've not been but she says it's the best for used kids books/toys in northern VA. I love this stage. my heart is happy!

Look for Scholastic’s Branches books. It includes various series. My favorite is The Last Firehawk.
