Are speed cameras coming to GW Parkway?

I'm also against speed cameras. Fining people is just a way for the government to take more of our money. Instead, we should have automated small-ordinance rocket launchers.

Driving 65 is fine for GW parkway, and more if there's zero traffic.

I get that some people are really bad drivers and don't know how to be in control of their own vehicle - they can stay out of the left lane.

And being in control of your vehicle means being on top of moving with the flow of traffic. Moving aside, changing lanes, letting people pass, knowing the road, among other things. Slower does not mean safer - if you think this is true, you're probably one of the people who uses their phone (even hands free for a call) and thinks it's fine because they've slowed down.

No, put down your damn phone ding dong and hang up the call - pay full attention to the road.

Says the Marylander going 45mph in the left lane.

The speed limit on the parkway is 40 mph.

Those damn MD drivers! Speeding everywhere!

Not northbound past Spout Run. Then it’s up to 50.

Looks like we found our slow poke left lane driver!

The speed limit hasn’t been 50 on this stretch for months. It’s a work zone.

The one rationalizing his excessive speed...

I really hope they do install them, lots of them. People drive like lunatics on that road. It’s engineered to be a 55mph road, no more. Lack of shoulders, sight distance, etc, plus deer and traffic volumes. Anything faster is a hazard. And I see people doing ~80+ regularly. It’s time to bring the speeds down. You won’t do it on your own, so you need to be fined.

No. All drivers should stay right unless passing. The left lane is for PASSING and the right is for TRAVEL.

If they do this they need to prevent scofflaws from zooming up the VA side and then cutting into the long line to MD.

100% THIS.

GW Parkway would be a lot safer if they added a reversible lane to the Clara Barton.

Probably just for the construction. GW parkway is basically a raceway and NPS does not care. The NPS cars are usually going at least 10 over.

I drive on GW parkway 5 days/week, and have for years. People regularly go 65 maybe 70, but not 80. My guess is that you have no idea how fast people are going and generally have a poor assessment of your surroundings and the flow. Just because you're going the speed limit, it doesn't make you a better driver than someone who drives faster, but knows how to adjust based on the conditions. 65 in the daytime, when dry, is totally fine.

When there is always a car in the right lane, you’re always driving in the left to pass all the cars. Therefore, it avoiding become a fast lane. Your theory only works when there are very few cars in both lanes - never the case on GW.

+1. I get the move to the right rule but most of the time I AM going faster and passing car after car on the left. If there is a car going faster in the left lane I will move over to the right usually to let them pass. But often the cars in the right lane are closely following each other so I keep going in the left lane until I can safely move over for the even faster passing car to go ahead. Sometimes this clear irritates said driver because they will ride unsafely on your rear bumper making it known THEY want to go even faster than you. At some point if you are in the left lane passing at say 60 mph (so definitely above the posted speed limit) and the right lane is congested the person who wants to do 65-70mph is just going to have to chill out for a few minutes.

Hopefully..people treat it like a GD racetrack.

Yeah. Hope they stick cameras every 1/4 mile. People are just totally unrealistic about their speeds.
