Um. Your spouse didn't get obese eating tons of vegetables. |
I think it will change a lot of lives but it won’t work for everyone. I also think this thread is going to devolve in the same scientifically illiterate fatphobia as always. |
Time and time again, research proves that exercise does not lead to weight loss. |
The word “phobia” suggests the fear is irrational. There is plenty of valid reasons to fear obesity. It’s not healthy, socially acceptable or comfortable. You need a better (fake) word than one that ends with “phobia.” Because fear of being fat is perfectly rational. |
NP: what’s going to happen is that the thread will devolve into scientifically illiterate fat-shaming and misinformation. You know those oldies but goodies like “Calories in, calories out,” and “It’s just about self-control.” 😒 |
The good news is this class of drugs helps with both of those things. |
Exactly. I’ve been on Oz and lost 20lbs. Lowered A1C to healthy level and no longer overweight. Totally relaxed about it. Not stressed over calorie counting and what I can/can’t eat. It’s made such a difference in how I think about food. Haven’t had bad side effects other than fatigue when I started. |
Exactly. Eat less and exercise more. |
Who told you that? |
But being hateful of fat people is irrational. |
People love to fat-shame and shame people who use medicine, same for people who need mental health help or help for drug addiction, and just as backwards. |
I’ve spent my whole life gaining and losing the same weight (biggest loss was 90 lbs in my teens after spending my whole childhood suffering from childhood obesity), eating as well as I can and doing 45 minutes of cardio 4-5 times a week along with strength training. I’m in excellent health other than my weight. Lots of research my experience is typical of people who successfully lost weight at some point. And before you attack my parents, I had a classic DCUM “almond mom” and grew up in an “ingredient household.” My hunger simply never matched a healthy BMI. No trauma, no abuse, just always hungrier than I “should” have been. |
But it isn’t fear. Please learn to use language correctly. You can say they hate them. That is an accurate description. But it’s not a “phobia.” |
I think it's great if these medicines can help all or most obese people! I've never been overweight but clearly it's a problem many struggle with.
I have been concerned about the "body positivity" direction our country is going in, where people basically make excuses of every type imaginable for why they can't lose weight, and then call on media/retailers to normalize obesity and stop "fat shaming" (which includes even the mention of diet or exercise). This is despite many others who are able to lose it through diet and exercise and prove it can be done. But if there is a certain subset of people for whom that doesn't work, but these drugs do, more power to them! Let's all strive to be a healthier country! |
I have relatives in two European countries. Most are normal weight and do not exercise except for some walking (but they all have cars so even that is limited). I see no evidence of “hard work and discipline” on their part in keeping themselves at a normal weight. With 70percent of Americans overweight or obese, we need help because “hard work and discipline” is not gonna happen with most people. |
