Private & Independent Schools
| The fact that you can afford to buy a home means you are wealthy. I know you may not feel that way but $175K per year is more than enough. I make about $35,000 myself and I am doing fine. |
I don't consider a 2500sf house with a 1960's kitchen and decades of deferred maintenance, outside the beltway, a monster house. We bought this house because of the "good schools". That didn't work out for dc so we are trying private now. This is working out much better for them but trying to sell in this market is iffy at best. |
I used to live on that when I was single, no kids, lived in small town in lo cost of living state. |
| Hello..! Our house is 1000sf. Get a grip. |
Let's see here .... hmmmm ..... bullshit. |
| No, really. I make about $35K and have one child. And we are just fine. We rent a decent 2 bedroom apt in a semi decent area. We have 1 car which I've just finished paying off. We don't go on vacations other than a day trip to an amusement park or a day trip to the mountains, state park, etc. I sell my child's old clothes at a consignment store and other junk on Craigslist. There are also plenty of people in this area who live on less. |

Yes, and they get assistance from the government for medical care, rent, food. That's how they "live" on less than that in one the most expensive regions of the U.S.
|
| I have friends who make less than I do and they don't get gov't assistance. They live in a 1 bedroom apt and buy things secondhand. They use coupons and don't waste money on crap. I even even have a friend who sends money home to her family in the Philippines and she probably is making less than I do. No gov't assistance there. I know it really bothers some people that you can live on less (sometimes a lot less) than $175K per year in this area. But they are smart about their money, they don't buy unnecessary things and they don't feel like they "need" a vacation every year or a new car every few years. Those are wants, not needs. |

My heart bleeds for the PP. Only 2,500 sq ft. No brand new Viking range in the kitchen. No Mercedes in the driveway. How does she stand it?
Snort. |
| sorry to hear about your 2500 sf house w/ good schools, PP. Do you want my 1100 sf house w/ crummy schools instead? |
| I will second the previous poster who makes around 35k. I am in the exact same boat, and I have a dc in private school. Sometimes I do wish there were more $$ to go around but there just isnt. I keep my head up and enjoy the gifts that I have been given. I have an extremely bright, intelligent, fun loving child who enjoys learning and being around other kids with similiar intrests. I dont own a home, I rent, I use coupons, I sell old clothing, I am frugal at it's finest, and I am proud to say I just paid my car off also. So in comparison to the pp with the 2500sqf house, my 750sqf apartment is probaly the size of you master bedroom. I live in a decent area, but the schools are not the best. Additionally, I do not receive any gov't assistance. At the end of every day I am thankful for everything no matter the size. |
| This thread demonstrates the bad taste in talking about money. |

For what it's worth, there is good reason that schools offer FA to present families before new families: they have to. It is simply wrong and unfair to accept a family (all families are new at some point), offer them money and then, down the road, take away their FA (absent a major lifestyle change). So when schools are looking at offering rewards, they have to consider them to be for the entire time period that the child is in the school. As such, it is harder to give money to new families, especially in the economy we are in.
On a side note, isn't it ironic that people are decrying (wrongly) people who receive government assistance while complaining about not getting FA to help subsidize their overpriced mortgage? |
| *That should say "awards", not "rewards". |
